We talk about this ALL THE TIME here. Too bad you missed it. The ONLY DL media that work consistently well for anybody is Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. If you buy anything else, you are asking for problems.

Memorex is without a doubt the worst DVD media I have ever bought. Around here we basically recommend Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden for DVD media.

Verbatim more widely accepted on various set-tops than Memorex.

I agree 100%. If you're burning dual layer, Verbatim +RDL is the only way to go.

Both brands you have used relabel multiple vendor's DL media. Memorex and Dynex both relabel Ritek media as well as others. Since you have not identified the MediaIDs no one knows just what you have had your bad and good experiences with.

And know one knows what burner you have experienced them with.

Your success with Memorex DL is rare and more detail would be interesting.

I join the other posters in recommending Verbatim.

If you got Verbatim cheap (as in not on sale) then its possible you got rebranded media. You have to read the label and if possible get the MediaID and check them online to see exactly what you are getting. So you in fact probably did not get authentic Verbatim media and I am assuming +R and or -R media.

Verbatim +R DL for my money is the most reliable of all the dual layer media. I think I have burned over 200 and maybe 2 failures, no exaggeration. I also used DVD-Lab Studio to author, PGC Edit to find and format the layer-break and burn with IMG Burn with NEC 3550 firewire burner.

If you are going to be doing DL, you owe to yourself to do as much research about it as possible. There is a few really good threads about how to properly author and burn a DL project and MANY threads about quality media. Time to start doing some reading up and ask questions to the forum for things you dont understand.

When was that? With the exception of some 2x CMC re-branded media media in about 2003, Verbatim has always used its own Mitsubishi discs (Mitsubishi owns Verbatim). Those are some of the best discs you can get. Always have been, since 2001.

The "speed" issue does not determine quality. Speed is a burner flaw.

Just recently got my first DL burner - a Pioneer 112D that I got on sale at Fry's in Austin, TX (was there on a trip) for about $30 after a $15 rebate. Taking the advice of this forum I bought some Verbatim DVD+R DL 8X media at the local Micro Center store. They were on sale for $28 plus tax for 15 disks - usually $40. The ones I got were the Made In Singapore (MIS) that seems to be the favored flavor of these disks. They also had 20 packs of the Verbatim Made In Taiwan which were not on sale. So far I have burned five disks with absolute success. ImgBurn actually tells me that they could be burned at 10X in my writer, but I have burned all but one at 6X just to give myself some margin. All have played without flaw in my Samsung DVD-HD860 player. That has been my experience so far. I plan on getting some more media before they go off sale this weekend.

Different brands of burners perform very differently with the same media at any speed. Many "top brands" of burners are very picky about the media they burn and the speed at which they burn them.

Verbatim is one of those brands that burn just about anywhere. But many burners are incapable of burning anything reliably at above half their rated speed.

Dynex is the house brand of BB, just as GQ ("Great Quality" -- what a laff !!) is for Fry's. You are probably best off avoiding anything that is sold under these labels.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

    To go slightly off topic.

I have noted that house brand media made by CMC is more likely to show obvious physical flaws than name brand media made by CMC with the same mediaID.

Is CMC offering media to these vendors with fewer QC tests in order to lower the price?

Is CMC offering the vendor a different returns credit for lowering the price?

I can't answer your two questions but I have observed the same housebrand phenomenon <sp>. I've used TDK branded CMC MAG AM3 that was decent media but had horrible luck with Office Depot branded CMC MAG AM3. They were as different as night and day and tested on numerous different burners.

    These are both likely, yes.

Generic media is also frequently fake (i.e. counterfeit media ID). CMC-made media, including even Verbatim SL made there, has a serial number in the clear plastic around the center hole, which starts with one of MAH, MAP, PAH or PAP; and are always Made in Taiwan. Fakes often have no number at all and/or come from the wrong country. In my experience.
