Anyone plans to buy laptop on Black Friday?
How about HP AMD Dual-Core 15.4-inch Laptop w/ 1GB, 160GB, DVD-RW for $449.99 . It is on laptop ad.
I tried to search for Black Friday laptop deals, I put them in a list:

It mostly boils down to which ones have the option(s) that you want and just as with any other computer, get the fastest that you can afford.
You can also look up the model numbers os sites that allow user feedback to see if there are any known issues.Google is your Friend -

Do NOT under any circumstances get any PC with Vista Home Basic. It really is basic. If you intend to do anything remotely related to multimedia, Home Premium is the minimum version.
Also, the 1GB shares 256MB with the integrated graphics. Combine this with Vista and you will be woefully under configured. 2GB is recommended.
These differences probably amount to at least $100, so look at options around $500. -
dude.you can choose windows XP if you want for free ,also 1gb of memory is more than enough for net/homework users.its a freak'n $399 lappy what do u expect C2D??? WITH 4GB MEMORY

Perhaps my assumption is wrong that someone asking for advice in a video-related forum is looking for a certain level of performance. If they want a basic laptop for surfing etc, then fine.
As for what I expect, I expect the end user to get a computer (laptop or otherwise) that will not create frustration and regret.
I don't know why you are jumping down my throat about my warning about Home Basic. It's a proven criticism spoken by many people who have purchased an inexpensive laptop that they had no idea what they were getting OS-wise. And the level of RAM after the GPU has taken its share will add to that regret and annoyance. -
