  1. I've been using the program "alltoavi" to convert my wmv files to avi (using DIVX or XVID codec) with no problem. When I try to use alltoavi to convert my RM files to avi, however, I get the following error message shortly after the start of the conversion: "mencoder.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience."

I also tried using the "r7c" program to convert rm to avi, but it also failed.

I have "real alternative" installed on my Windows XP Media Center PC and I have no problem playing rm files with Media Player Classic. [I have not installed Real Player.] Is there something I can do to convert rm to avi using alltoavi? Is there a simple alternative that is more likely to work?

    Thanks!

Try another mencoder/ffmpeg gui like super.

  3. I just tried installing and using the SUPER program. When I tried to convert an RM file to AVI, I got the same exact error message. Thus, the problem seems to be with the mencoder program and not the gui.

    Any other ideas???

many rm to other format converters have problems if you do not have helix yuv codecs. You can download from the link at

To the best of my knowledge, the codecs I am using are Real Alternative and DivX (or Xvid). Are these codecs not compatible with the mencoder program? Are the "helix yuv" codecs more compatible with mencoder?

Neither of the GUI programs I have appear to offer the option of using "helix yuv" codec. AlltoAvi has nothing that looks close, and SUPER offers the option of "huffYUV." What GUI offers "helix yuv?" Will my stand alone DivX player be able to handle "helix yuv" video files?

Sorry if my questions are stupid, but I am novice!

The program I have used successfully for RM to AVI conversion is called EO_Video.

It requires the Real Player program to be present.

Other programs that claim to do it fail for all sorts of reasons.

    It also works with RealAlternative.
AviSynth way is better (full control and ability to do all necessary edits), EO_Video is simple and still reliable. The first ever program capable of working with RMs.

rm uses a color space which is yv12 with u and v channels reversed. the helix codecs enable the color space conversion afaik.
Real alternative is not a codec. I have given you the links, it is upto you whether you download or not. I know you do not have the codecs because Real7ime converter did not work for you.
