  1. I have a video on a DVD-R that I would like to put on my computer as an mpg, is there anyway to do this?

If you are wanting to copy a burned DVD-R to your computer, there should be no encryption involved. You can just copy it, like any other file. Or if you just want to extract the MPEG from the DVD, try VOB2MPEG. It depends on what you want to do with the file once you have it on your hard drive.

But if it's a commercial pressed DVD, there are several ways. You need a 'ripper' to extract commercial pressed DVDs to your hard drive most times. Newer DVDs have some fairly complex encryption. You may need a program like DVDFab HD Decrypter to backup the DVD files to your computer. Look to our 'Tools' section of the the left for other ripping/decryption programs.

Yes, it always has with me. What format is the audio on the DVD? You might drop the VOB2MPG MPEG file into Gspot 2.70 and see if it shows any audio and what format it is.

  6. Well there is audio on the DVD it self, and if I play the VOB file on the DVD off the DVD itself it plays audio fine. I don't know when I run it through that program it loses audio.

You might not have an audio codec. I assume you have no sound when playing the file?

Try Gspot to see which codec you are missing, if you think that's the problem. My first guess would be AC3.

try redoing the dvd files you got with dvdfab dycrypter with dvdshrink with only the audio track you want checked in reauthor mode. choose the ac3 5.1 in the language of your choice for best results. then use vob2mpeg on the resulting vobs. vob2mpeg doesn't work well with multiple audio tracks.
