  1. Hi
I just captured an avi to 2.11 Gigs
I understand this is over windows (im running win2k FAT32)filesize limit?
Well I need to open it and edit it but nothing will let me accept for Avi io which only lets me play it
    Any solutions?

  2. Hi again
I just read the 2 gig avi file limit is a fat32 limition yet if avi-io lets me play it then surely there must be away to open it and edit it? If not is there anyway I can split this file to edit it as a smaller (under the 2 gig limit) and rejoin where needed later?
    Any ideas?
    ThanX ahead

  3. ok when i try open it in virtualdub i get this message
invalid avi LIST chunk <4 bytes
I dcc sent on irc part of the file to myself so id be able to divxfix it and hopefully view it that way however it has the same probs as the original file and cant be fixed or viewed in vdub i get the same "invalid avi LIST chunk <4 bytes" msg with it
sooo now im pretty clueless what to try now
    *pulling hair out!*

  4. What do you plan on doing with the file? If you plan on making and svcd or vcd you can definitely open the file with tmpgenc encode and edit however you like.

Have you tried to edit it with adobe premier? you can download the fully functional trial for 30 days and you can edit the avi and keep it in avi format.

  5. Thanx for the reply
I think I need to give a little more info
I captured to DivX with Pcm audio and all I was [planning on doing was editing the video and compressing the audio and save it as a DivX video
Premiere won't let me open the file neither will vdub or aviedit. I just tried Tmpgenc as you mentioned and it works although I wasn't really planning on turning it into a vcd but if thats the only way then I will. Incidently how do I cut out sections of video in tmpgenc?

  6. I just tested converting it to a pal vcd with tmpgenc and the output mpeg was just a totaly black silent video £$£$%$%£$£%$!!! :/

  7. replying myself again ;p
ok i thought to hell with it and i changed my win2k drive to NTFS
My 2.11gig avi is sat on FAT32 drive is that why I still can't access it?

  8. FAT32 has a 4 GB file size limit, not a 2 GB limit.

Have you upgraded to VirtualDub 1.4.5? It solves some problems reading invalid LIST blocks.

Also, if you want to avoid problems and have better quality, you should try to capture with a codec like Huffyuv or PICVideo MJPEG and later recompress to your desired output format.

You're using w2k, why won't you just create a partion in NTFS? Using NTFS, there isn't an AVI-limit at all!!

In FAT32 (I use winME), I can go upto 4Gb max AVI size, but before realy working with it, I first must split it into segemented AVI's of maximum 2Gb. Then TMPGenc can deal with it. VDub is the best tool for that.

  10. HI HI
my lack of detail is amazing
ok im runnign a dualboot system with win98 and win2k I capture in win98 for various reasons
Ive been trying to acces it in Win2k which I have only just converted to NTFS
I think somehow the avi has become corrupt? bcos in the new virtualdub 1.4.5 im still getting the "invalid avi LIST chunk <4 bytes" error Im not sure what that means
Now I think I may have found a partial solution which is indeed strange!
I dcc sent part of the file to myself in order to have just 20 megs of the 2.11gig avi to work with for a test
I then used divxfix to rebuild it
the avi then plays although the picture is completely corrupted scenes are mixed up and it hardly plays
I can then take this file and run it through AVIDefreezer prog and hey presto it works perfectly accept now I have no sound
This takes a loong time for 20 megs and id estimate the whole process if succesful would take maybe 4 days! and divxfix seems prone to crashing easily with this kind of workload
Sooo is my methodology totaly insane or is there an easier way? There must be I hope *fingers crossed*

  12. How are you capturing the AVI? That is, what color format, resolution, audio settings, etc. are you using? What software are you capturing with?

If I had to guess, I'd say the problem is being caused by DivX. Apart from the other issues surrounding it, it's really not a capture codec. If you still want to use it, try reinstalling the latest standard version of the DivX codecs. Yours may be corrupted.

  13. Hi again
I used virtualdub 1.4d to capture
at 320X240 resolution YUYV colour format DivX
    32HZ 16bit PCM audio mono
Really basic settings really but they give ok results
I've captured lots this exact way and never had this problem
I think I rememeber however that when i quit capturing instead of seeing the "writing to capture" it just stopped without a msg
I don't know what exactly hasnt been written maybe someone can enlighten me

  14. Try capturing the audio at 44.1 KHz and using a codec other than DivX (for testing purposes). Huffyuv would be a good codec with which to test:
