  1. Ive noticed for a long wile that when MacPar delux is unraring the whole computer is very sluggish: takes time for new apps to open, lots of beach balls etc.

looking at the RAM usage MPD seems to take very little, CPU is sometimes 50% sometimes 20%.

while watching live HDTV w Miglia, there will be pauses in the action while MPD does something.

will more RAM help? I have 3GB now. is it just that MPD somehow monololizes the CPU even if it doesn't seem to show on the activity monitor ever greater than 50%

any ideas greatly appreciated. Ive learned to live w it but would consider 4GB more RAM if that would really help

    cheers and thanks

email gerard the devloper about your problems rotus.
methinks though MPD is trying to monopolize over
the Migilia, which is probably trying to monopolize in the first
    place....

    loekjehe isn't Gerard Putter,
    creator of Mac Par deluxe.

    loekjehe is the creator of
Split and Concat, which works with
    Mac par Deluxe.

here is what he had to say:

    Hello Terry,

I quickly read the forum page. I will not post to the forum, because
I provide my support via e-mail (and I reply to every mail). I cannot
answer the question of rotuts without knowing more details. When he
could not find my e-mail he didn't look very well: a link is in the
documentation in the section "how to get support", and also directly
in the Help menu as "e-mail the author".

  9. thanks for staying w this

I got this FW from Loek to Gerard:

    Hello RT,

Loek Jehee forwarded your mail to me; I recommend to use the menu "send e-mail to the author" in the MacPAR deLuxe Help menu to directly contact me for question on the program. Anyway, thanks for your mail, and for using MDPL. To answer your question: MPDL is a CPU-heavy program. A lot of calculations take place, in particular in the repair phase. There is not much I can do about that. I optimized the program considerably during the last few years, but it still remains a "hog", as you say. The 3 GB of memory you have is more than enough, and adding more will not make any difference.

However, when you are sure the program uses 50% CPU, and still the computer slows down considerably, then apparently some other process is using the other 50% the the CPU. It might be interesting to find out what program that is (or are), and see what happens if you manage to stop the other program(s) during the MPDL run.

    Regards,

so there is is! Tooo bad I ddin't find the email to do this myself in time

thanks for your help I do appreciate it

saved a bundle on RAM $$$$$$!

    cheers again!

so my guesses are then, according to Gerard, if you stop
Azareus or Thoth, and do your MPDL work unpacking stuff,
then you will be much better rotus. Not knowing your setup,
I'm only guessing your running all three apps on the same machine.

If your gonna run a dedicated Azureus or Thoth client 24/7,
my suggestion is invest not in more RAM, but invest in a second
mac and dedicate it just to these apps.

Azureus and Thoth will run on as little as as a G3 processor....
I have a dedicated mac on my home network that is an old
    B&W G3 300 with 512MB of Ram, OSX 10.4.8, two 80GB HDs,
and 10/100T ethernet that all it runs is Azureus and Thoth.
And I only paid $5 for it.

When stuff is done, I simply transfer over my network the
stuff from their download folders to my main machine,
and unpack them using MPDL, and then burn as necessary.

This way, my loads are managed rather easy between all machines,
and I don't have to worry about CPU hogging...every machine has a dedicated purpose.
    my 02¢......
check ebay.com or megamacs.com for good deals on old G3's and G4's.
