    i've been sitting on this question for a while until i could show an example video of what i'm talking about...around the 30 to 35 second mark in this vid u'll see a portion of the vid highlighted and the rest greyed out....what software can i use to do this?

    Most editing software that allows overlays, opacity masking or canned "spotlight" effects. Most edit programs allow one or more.

    cool...thanx for the input...i just didnt have a name to put on it and spotlight seems like the right thing i should look for

    You could use e.g. AviSynth Overlay function with (black frame + mask image) as overlay. Mask image is used to control opacity within overlay image of the same size (black portions are for full transparency, white portions are for full opacity), in your case it could be a black spot on grey background. More details in AviSynth docs.

    unfortunately i'm an AVIsynth novice...i've never quite grasped how to use it...it might be beyond what i can understand.I will however look for some basic tutorials and give it a go...thanx for the input guys

    the avisynth route was a bust..is there any user friendly consumer video editing software that can do this effect?
