I know that the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player has a USB connection, and will work on a PC.

I have also heard that the latest versions of WinDVD support HD-DVD playback.

I have a Dell 1705E laptop with an ATI 256 MB graphics card.

Any chance I could get HD-DVD playback to work?

    Thanks in advance,

You could also check the specs recommended by WinDVD or PowerDVD for HD playback.

I'm sure that my laptop's cpu can handle the playback, and I've found articles on the web confiming that the version of WinDVD 8 is capable of HD-DVD playback.

What I don't know about is this whole HDCP thing. I understand that to playback HD-DVD, you have to have a graphics card that is HDCP enabled - which apparently is some sort of hardware key.

I have an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 video card.

    Any suggestions?

It's more than just the video card. The video card, monitor, HD-DVD drive, and OS all have to support it.

I was under the impression (though I could be wrong) that HD-DVD was only possible using Vista.

As for your video card, the specs are here and it appears to support HDCP: http://ati.amd.com/products/mobilityradeonx1400/specs.html
