I have a brand new Dell Latitude D830... however after just two weeks it won't boot up anymore.

Whenver I hold down the standby button, the standby light comes on and the Bluetooth light flickers. The standby light goes off when I take my finger off the standby button. I was told elsewhere to try removing the battery and hold the standby button down for 30 seconds - when I tried this, the caps lock/num lock/scroll lock lights came on, but there was no response.

Also, you can't hear the hard drive starting up or the fan whirring as you'd expect.

The problem occurred after Windows crashed (I'm running Vista Business) and the screen completely froze, at which point I held the standby button down to turn the machine off... however when trying to reboot, I started getting the above problems.

Any quick fix tips, or do I need to contact Dell and get them to look at it? I'm thinking it's probably most likely a hardware fault.

    Thanks

Hello. I assume you have already contacted Dell for assistance. You have a new computer and paid for a warranty including technical support, so use them. Do you know what caused your laptop to crash?; it sounds as though the boot sector has been damaged. If you have the OS reinstallation disc, see if you can load the disc and at the prompt, press f12 to boot from the disc. If you get that far, navagate to "fix my computer" and begin repairs. If you are unable to load the OS disc or do not have one, you need to arrange for warranty repairs (on-site) and if you did not receive the Vista OS reinstallation DVD and resource CD with your purchase, request them from Dell, as they are both necessary in case of catastrophic HDD failure and the attendant need to reinstall the operating system.

  4. As others have said, 2 weeks old, Call Dell!

For example if you suffered a hardware failure that can cause the crash and not starting.

All you can do is remove both battery and drives , and connect it to the external power plug pack .

If it fires up with prompt on screen , then a drive is questionable .

If nothing appears on screen , problem is more serious and requires dell service repair .

Much as I hate to have to admit it, my other half bought a Dell laptop and I had to call their service department for her with a problem. The service department for the UK is actually in Dublin and they are very, very good.

Any chance you've put into hibernation? Have seen a few apparently dead laptops followed by red faces!
