I'm somewhat of a newbie and trying to author a HD DVD (on regular dvd). I'm reading about .m2t and .ts and .tp file formats but can't find what they exactly are. I have a Sony HDR-HC7 cam but when I capture using the Sony app (Picture Motion Browser) or Nero 7 I don't see .m2t files, they are .avi. How do I get the .m2t file? Do I want / need it?
Some please enlighten me...
Thanks...

Ok I found some info on another site. I found out that I was capturing with the output of my HC7 set to "HDV to DV" so it was SD, when I turned that off the result was a .m2t file.
I'm still learning this stuff but any input would be appreciated...

Following this thread ( http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=705146I ) successfully burned two HD discs of the same video, one HD DVD (using Ulead) and one Bluray (AVCHD using Nero). I ran them down to the local Best Buy to compare on their respective players. The HD-DVD video looked much sharper and is exactly what I'm looking for but I'm afraid the Bluray maybe wasn't at the same bitrate so I'm redoing following along carefully and then I'll view them again.
Stay tuned... -
I have the HDD version of the same camera. Assuming you are recoding in HD mode and recording AVCHD files, I see no reason whatsoever that you'd find a perceivable difference in whether it was played back in a BluRay or HD-DVD player. The information is the same.
What COULD be different is the display and/or player settings. Were they played back on the exact same TV or on different TVs? It should be played on the same physical TV if possible to avoid differences resulting from the TV's abilities.
Hell, you could walk around BestBuy's entire flat panel area and notice that one image looks better or worse than the others, even if they are receiving the same signal. Just be sure to blame the right part in the AV equation, not just the source.
