I have a huge file which resulted from an camera being unattended (as I forgot to turn it off).

Only want the first couple of minutes as the rest is garbage.

My goal is to retain those few minutes and discard the rest in order to not waste HD space whihc is precious.

Suggestions please? What are the best tools here that will split that files where its needed?

    Thanks

If a Canon XH-A1 (just guessing), try HDTV2MPeg2 to cut HDV video on I frames.

What edit software do you have?

  7. What are my options for splitting a .m2t file?
One option is MediaCoder. is has a "Time" tab with a "Select" button that allows you to visually set the start/end for the split.

What are the best tools here that will split that files where its needed?
I don't know if MediaCoder is the best tool for you - for me it is. It might seem a bit overwhelming at first if you are not familiar with the program but then this Tutorial might be helpfull.

So you don't even know what an "A1" is?

An A1 camera or ancient camcorder with that designation.... no.

I use a Canon XH-A1 just about every week. That's dated at this point too but very usefull.

Then say XH-A1 and don't leave us guessing.
