Can the newer DDR2 memory be used in older systems that used DDR memory? DDR2 memory is often cheaper now that the older DDR memory. I realize that the newer memory is faster but if that is the only issue, then it should run at a slower clock speed. But if there is an architectural difference that makes the two types of memory incompatible, that's another story. I would appreciate any feedback.

  2. No. DDR2 memory modules have basically the same dimensions as the DDR modules, but because of different voltages and pin configurations, DDR2 modules have a different "key" or notch in their connector to prevent them from being plugged into an incompatible socket. DDR2 memory modules will only fit in systems and motherboards designed to specifically support DDR2 memory. A DDR2 SODIMM will not fit in the DDR memory slot.

Sorry, it's incompatible. DDR2 uses a 240 pin socket, while DDR uses a 184 pin socket.

Is there a particular reason you don't want to use DDR or DDR2?

DDR2 is likely much BETTER, and not expensive either.

DDR3 is even better than DDR2

Supplies of the DDR1 RAM are dwindling. Just doesn't make a lot of sense to continue making the stuff, since the new "standard" is multicore processors, which require faster RAM to keep up. However, I recently installed 5 machines with Socket 775 (Dual Core) Gigabyte motherboards that accepted the old DDR1 sticks, of which I have plenty.

DDR3 is faster than DDR2 (and DDR4 will be faster than DDR3). Fortunately, that doesn't matter much for video encoding or playback.

    Wait...there is a DDR3, already?

And you kids and yer damn dual-core processors! One solid working CPU is all ya need.
