  1. Hi all. Sorry but not 100% sure on which forum to post so, I'm here!

Ok, I've doen a few video to DVD transfers in my time, no problem.

    1) I capture into my PC via a tv card. (IT captures as DVD PAL format so no further conversion needed)
    2) I then burn to DVD using TMPGEnc DVD author. Pretty straightforward really.

However, I have now been passed an old family vhs tape that has a great picture but an awful audio
track. I should stress that I'm pretty deft at cleaning up audio from things like cassette tapes and vinyl, but,
how can I do it from a VHS tape? Seems to me that I would need to first isolate and remove the audio track, clean it up, and then fix it back into the video? In which case I would worry about the sync loss?

Maybe there is a simple way of doing this but at the moment I'm perplexed. Any help appreciated.

You should not get any sync problems if you just don't change the length of the audio. Are you capturing to a mpg file?

  3. Sorry?

I capture the whole thing to DVD.

From there, I need to know how to clean up the audio only? Normally I would work with the audio in a WAV file, but, I dont know how to ..

    a) take it away from the video and
    B) put it back in the video in total sync.

I am sure someone will come up with free software.
You can use TMPGEnc Xpres to import your file in and export as ES (Audio + Video).
Than you can work on your audio like you did before. This software has some audio filters, but I do not know how bad is original.
Than import all into your authoring software and make DVD.
Just make sure your fixed audio file is same length as original.

I use VdubMod 1.6.0.0 Surround to strip/convert audio. It seems to accept almost everything, AVI, mpg, VOB etc. I usually save it as <No compression PCM>. The resultant WAV file can then be manipulated. As Baldrick notes "You should not get any sync problems if you just don't change the length of the audio".

The apps I use, MPEG Video Wizard DVD or NeroVision Express have no problems with the WAV file and both will convert to AC3 for the final DVD. I simply kill/mute the original audio and add the new.

    1) Demux - Separate Video from Audio into 2 files

    2) Convert audio track into WAV

    3) Clean up audio

    4) Convert Audio to AC3 or MP2

    5) Mux New AC3 or MP2 Audio and demuxed video track into new MPEG file

Follow the advise of the others and use Adobe Audition to manipulate your audio. It ain't free, but it's good.

As has been mentioned, don't change the length of anything (viideo or audio) or you'll lose sync.
