vob to editable format

Ok I'm sure this has been asked and I've read tons of things about ffmpegx and inthe other forums about how to convert DVDs but I just can't get it right. A friend of mine recorded my wedding into 4 separate miniDVDs in his canon camcorder, he sent me all of those dvd files in one disk in 4 separate folders(01,02,03 and 04), inside each of those folders I have the video_ts folder with its respective files inside(exactly as they were in the original DVD).

Lets pick folder 01 for example:
I have tried to convert the video_ts folder as a whole, with many different settings and it encodes but some settings gives me a file with no sound others give audio out of sync and others just give me a white screen with audio after a few mins of movie.

I also tried the .vob files, like the video_01_01.vob and the video_01_02.vob and they also give me strange results and never something I can watch in quicktime to view or iMovie for editing.

My main question is, will I be able to convert this files to an editable format without buying the MPEG-2 Playback component or is that a must have to convert this type of file in a mac and if not where can I find some info ?

I've also tried demuxing and them muxing it back but no luck.

If you want them in iMovie, then you should convert to DV. Conversion to DV with ffmpegX requires the ffmpeg engine, which doesn't support VIDEO_TS folders as input, but does support VOB files for input. So the first step goal is to combine the VOB files that belong together to one big VOB file, so each feature con be converted as one file.

The VOB files that belong together in one video title set (VTS), can be joined with a tool like D-Vision.
Drop the merged file in ffmpegX, pick the DV preset, encode. Import the resulting DV in iMovie, edit.

I tried this and I still got audio sync problems. Someone help I dont know what do do anymore. This is for my wedding video

Selecting Decode with QT (Options tab) may improve sync, but requires the MPEG-2 playback component for VOB source files.

Failing that, you encode to (any) other QuickTime readable format and let iMovie do a (second) conversion to DV, if that keeps better sync.
Or you could re-sync in iMovie.
