Visit AVSForum.com and look in the Display Devices section. There are tons of model specific threads for every type of HDTV. Here's the LCD Flat Panel discussion area...

I have a 40 inch Samsung LCD HDTV and it's terrific. Samsung makes some really nice ones. I'd definitely advise getting something that can do 1080p. Be very careful and don't be fooled by language that says a TV "supports" a certain resolution. I would think that in the size you are looking for that the danger of getting a model that does 720p native (and thus downconverts all 1080 signals to that resolution) would be low, but after you find a model you like, do a web search and look for reviews on it to be sure it really does 1080p.
The best advice I can give you for an HDTV is to note that the quality of your video is totally dependent on the quality of your connections to the TV. Even standard definition stuff looks great on my TV because I have high quality connections for all my sources, including standard definition cable TV.
High quality connections are:
component
HDMI
DVI
High quality connections are NOT:
composite
S-video
old style coax cable like used in the USA for cable TV -
The secret behind the LCD/Plasma screens is the panels they are using.
I prefer LCD screens, so I'll talk for them: There are 3 major LCD Display manufactures at this time: Samsung, Sharp and LG. I'm both a Samsung and Sharp fanboy myself regarding LCD TVs. Samsung latest screens around 40", are 720p and use something called motion drive that helps a lot the picture motion. The best models are those with the "M" letter inside there types.
Sharp LCDs are another beast: They don't use technics for better results, they try to fix the problems direct, using there latest technology. That doesn't mean that they look good always: You need good source with the sharp screens. Good source means HD DVD or Blu Ray...
1080i or 1080p screens do exist at 40 and 42" LCD displays. But IMO you need 46" or more to see the benefit of this resolution.
