After buying 50 packs of Sony 1-8x MIJ's (50DPR47LS3) for some time, YUDEN000T02 media code... which work well..

Running low, and seeing Best Buy have 25 packs on sale in their add for $7.99 each, I ran up and bought two...

They are 1-16x... Made in Japan... (25DPR47LS4) but they are Sony D21 media code...

They don't burn as well in my Lite-On 1693 (KS0B firmware)... I get Higher PIE/PIF on quality scans in Nero CD/DVD speed.... compared to the YudenT02's...

Is the Sony media code supposed to be "good" or "bad"??

Sony media is good. There is more to media quality than PIE/PIF scans.

thank you... I guess I'm just getting too confused/worried over some of this stuff...

But they do seem to play back ok... even with what appear to be "worse numbers" on the tests...

  4. There is no media on the market currently that will scan with PIE/PIF results like YUDEN000T02. That in no way means SONY D21 is inferior - just not as exceptional as the T02's.

Speaking of Sony's... I went to CompUSA the other day and browsed their media section. I saw two bundles of the AccuCore stuff... One's from Japan, the other from Taiwan. Unfortunately they wanted exorbitant prices for those 50-pack spindles, so I can't tell you what media codes they got. :P

Short answer, NO. The MIT Sony media codes are considerably better than a lot of cheap crap media like Ritek or Prodisc, and I'd buy them(and have) if Verbatim or the Sony MIJ were not on sale and I needed media. They just don't measure up in quality to the Sony Taiyo Yuden +Rs.

Thanks, but I guess I didn't ask clearly enough..

I was thinking in terms of MIJ sony spindle vs MIT sony spindle.. are they about the same??

I'm doing ok with the last MIJ Sony +R pack (media code SONY D21) I got... but last time I looked at the shelf, the same spindles were all MIT.. wasn't sure if they are as good or not..

PS: From experience I know to try and say away from crap like memorex and no-name... I've stuck with Verbatim (RICHOJPN), and Sony (TY02), and now these Sony (Sony D21)... and have been very pleased. I just panic when the brand/packages I was buying are no longer available... I want to be sure spend my money on something as GOOD

The DVD+R 16x MIT SONY and 16x MIJ SONY that I've bought have all had a media code of SONY D21 and both produce quality scans that yield about the same score.

You can get 50 8x MIJ SONY plus 25 MIT Sony at Sam's Club for about $25.

I woudl like to add that I have the SONY version (DRU-800a) of the Lite-ON 1693s and I have to burn all of the 16x media at 8x to get bunrs similar to the 8x media I've used.

The 8x MIT SONY has a media code of D11 and is almost as good as the MIJ SONY T02.

Is the GQ brand MIT, MIJ or what? Also Frys showing $19.99 for 50 pack just now. I got some Sony D21 from Office Depot that were MIT which are only media found thus far that play on Mintek portable player although I've not tried MIJ which I suspect should do equally well. However, I've read some posts on Verbatims MII (made in India) reported to be much lower quality than other Verbatim media, and I'd want to avoid any MII unless I see better results reported.

Also I've read threads on MCC004 Playos sold by Staples which seem to indicate they are decent but not as good quality as Verbatim MCC004. I wonder if the same relative quality holds for the GQ versus the Sony brand D21. BTW Staples has the Playos on special beginning today for $5 after rebate for the 60 pack.

  15. 1. GQ media at Fry's with Sony media codes is GENUINE Sony media made by Lead Data in Taiwan.

    2. Playo media at Staples with MCC media codes is FAKE MCC media made by AML and UME in China. They use the MCC media codes to make their media more compatible with a wider range of burners.

Thanks for clarification on GQ media at Fry's. In that case the deal butt_crack posted interests me, but I find $19.99 price at Fry's which is more than double the price in the 6/10 butt_crack post which is not a deal at double the $9.50 price.

  17. I've been using sony D11 since early 2004. burned about 500 without a single coaster using a pioneer 107d. I have just switched to D21 and though unfortunately my burner will only work @2,4x or 4x the results are still perfect with one little problem though. in fact dvdinfopro's pipo scanning shows aone single very high peak at about 1GB while the rest of the disc is extremely good. this happens with EVERY D21 disc only - it doesn't happen with D11 no matter what speed I choose. anybody has any idea why? should I be worried? anybody with a different burner experiencing the same problem?
