  1. I'm trying to capture laserdisc with Virtualdub on a 98SE machine with a Philips Acoustic Edge soundcard.

The video capture works great, but I am getting no sound with the S/PDIF input on the soundcard (connected to the coax digital output on the LD player). Well, I am getting sound through my speakers, which means the soundcard is definitely accepting and decoding the PCM audio from the laserdisc player. But no sound on my video files!

Likewise, no sound if I use 'Sound Recorder' in the OS.

What the heck do I have to do to actually record the great PCM sound that I can hear?

  2. It sounds like your capture program is not using the right input source for the audio.

When you are recording, open up the windows "Play control" (speaker icon in tray) and select "options/properties" Click on the recording radio button and hit OK. Make sure S/PDIF is selected as the source and the volume is not all the way down. The recording source, and playback source can be different, that is why you may hear the audio, but not be recording it.

You may want to look through the settings of your video capture program to see if it is set to the correct input.

  3. The Philips Mixer does not have separate settings for playback and record, even under 'Advanced'.

It has 'line-in' and 'S/PDIF in'. The latter does change the volume of the PCM when I listen to the laserdiscs through the computer. I've got it cranked nice and loud, but nothing comes through when recording.

Virtualdub does not have an option to choose a specific line input, so I assume it defaults to the mixer output (which should be fine).

  4. Update: I got some new drivers that I'll try tonite.

  5. Even if the Phillips mixer does not record select, you may still find it in the Windows mixer.

But getting an updated driver couldn't hurt either.

    Good luck!
