    Hi,

I have a major codec (I think) problem. Certain files that used to play fine no longer do so. In particular my problem is with WMV files and I've tried Win Media Player, VLC, and Media Player Classic. I get messages like 'Can not render file'. However some WMV files still play perfectly.

The problems stem from installing Intervideo's DVD Copy 5, which would not work. In a forum (not here) someone said installing 'Windows Media Format 9' would fix it. I managed to find this on a torrent and installed it. That's when the problems started, but I'm not sure which one caused the problems, probably the latter.

I have uninstalled both, but that has not fixed the problem.

Is there anyway I can uninstall all the WMV codecs and re-install safe ones?

    Many thanks.

I hadn't, did so as soon as I read your post, and it has solved the problem. I feel rather stupid not thinking of that. Many, many, thanks.

Phew, I had been thinking of that dreaded word 're-install'. :P You've saved me !!

    Thanks again.

  4. You're very brave installing any software from a torrent.

It was stupid, won't happen again unless I know exactly what it is and that it's ok. I did check it with my AV though and it was clean.
