Multiple Computer Encoding?

Hello,

I was wondering if it was possible to harness the power of multiple computers to encode a single DVD simultaneously?

My current CPU is a weak 3800+, so encoding a DVD can take upwards of 2 to 3 hours at times. I own 2 laptops and 2 desktop computers, so i was wondering, is it possible to use my other 3 computers to encode a DVD at the same time in order to cut down on encoding time?

I will be purchasing a new computer sometime within the next few months (with hopefully a dual or quad core CPU), but i was simply wondering if there was a way to help me in my current situation.

Well you can , but it also depends on what your source files are ... from the sound's of it , getting a faster system really isn't going to make that much difference in the time it takes .

You might use one to do the conversion , and another to create backgrounds for the menu (motion menu scripts and alike) , but that's about the max , unless you can split the source file up and let each system encode those parts ... finally merging them back on one system later and connecting the menu components at the same time .

I encode files across my lan on rare occasions , but have little need to do so .

Vegas can do this, so long as all computers are mapped the same way so all project media is accessible to all. I don't know if Premiere can, but it would not surprise me. I don't know of any dedicated encoders that do network rendering however, and certainly no authoring tools.

As can DVD Rebuilder - that's one powerful freeware app, plus has distributed encoding support via a plugin called RB Farm -

DVD-RB does lend itself to distributed encoding because of the way it breaks down the disc by cell. I can't see why the plugin can't easily be modified to work with HCEnc as well.

That said, it is only useful if you already have a disc, but not much help if you are still at the authoring stage. Nice to know about though.

Vidomi also has distributed encoding.. Free and easy to use..

And absolutely worthless in this context as it doesn't encode mpeg-2 for DVD, which is what the OP is after.
