Hi guys!
I recently got back my XS34 from repair and plugged it in and now there are closed captioning or subtitles appearing in random places on the screen of my TV and the manual only shows how to turn them on/off for DVD viewing on page 73 and on Display settings both of which I tried. I didn't turn them on my TV because the remote to it doesn't work so I guess they're coming from the XS34. Anyone know how to get rid of them?

Its either your TV or the Deck. Simply go to the display and cut it off. If that doesn't work I would complaint to who ever repair the deck.

What did you get it repaired for?
One way to see if it's the TV or the XS34 is to try only one then only the other and see when you have the problem. -
Dont know if this will help but:
Last week in backing up "the number 21" I noticed random cc/subs on the screen after riping to my HD. I use anydvd and cloneDVD2, never found one I couldn't rip. Used WinDVD to view it, before burn.
WinDVD showed both CC and Sub off.Found that the bought disk has no subtitles, just CC.
Its an interactive disk, can go on the net for extra play of ?. When I rip, its always just main movie and subs if there. Hadn't noticed that in clonedvd2 it showed 3 sub tracks and they were checked (next to the checkmark instead of the language; it said undefined). I looked a little closer at the film and saw that the screen was showing subs, not cc. Also the words did not match what was said. More like directors comments, which they where,Hence the random showing on screen.
The cc button on windvd worked fine. But the disk (HD copy) showed no subs availiable in windvd.
I ripped it again, this time with no subtitle boxs checked. Problem gone.
NOTE:
Subtitles are a function of the DVD player.
Closed Captions are a function of the TV.
Easy way to tell just by looking, which it is, is when it reads "door slams", "soft music",
"gun fires", you get the idea. Its Closed Captioned.
Hope this is of help. The Second Amendment:

Hi, thanks alot guys!
Yeah I only saw the words while I was watching TV through the deck and I remember seeing it say (laughing) so I guess it's CC. Also, It happened during some commercials and not on others.
I got it repaired because after about 120 burns it no longer recognized/loaded or played brand new blank Taiyo Yuden DVD-R disks and Verbatim DVD-RW media that it did until now and even the ones it burned itself but it does recognize/load and play consumer DVDs. It also would not turn off a couple times and had a few other glitches. Toshiba even made me pay $40.00 to ship the thing to them even though it was within the 90 day warranty. At least they could have waited to see if it was user error and then made me pay 80 to get it back if it was but it was a legitimate problem with the deck. -
You should have taken that to Customer Services & make a BIG,BIG COMPLAINT. Its not Fair. I never had a problem with Toshiba but I wouldn't that one go.....
