hi, how hard is it to setup and configure apache web server? I know apache is a free download but is there anything else i need to download with it? I tried it in the past but didn't keep it for long. Is it geared towards beginers like me? or is it for more advance high level. What if i don't have a domain name and all that? Can i setup that for free?

Apache is fairly easy to set up. Just go to www.apache.org and read up before you try to install.

Depending on how your internet connection is set up, it is fairly easy to create a no domain web host.

If you have a router, set it up so it forwards http requests (port 80) to your server (the computer with apache). You can sign up for an account at www.no-ip.com
There's even guides on how to use it here

Basically, a program runs on the server that tells no-ip to re-route requests for your web domain (for example php111.no-ip.org) to your computer. The program always runs and tells the no-ip site what your current IP is, such as in the case of a dynamic IP.

Will you help me setup and configure in a messenger? There are fatal errors installing it.

Which part has fatal errors? Apache? No-ip?

What is the OS of the server?

Did you read the install instructions thoroughly?

    And especially, check here:

For testing purposes you could install either xampp or Easyphp . Believe each is one click install and you have test server up and running. Both include php, mysql etc.

What Vista are you using? When I first got a machine that had Vista Ultimate installed, it had User account control turned on, which blocked most every program I use. After turning it off, I was better able to network and serve files.

Your best bet is to have a dedicated server that is not used for day-to-day applications. My server is an "old" 1ghz XP machine that runs apache, php, mysql, etc. I also have the same config set up for Linux (Ubuntu) on another drive.

I did my install hands-on, as I like to work with the "guts" of a system. You may have better luck, as coalman suggested, with Easyphp, though it looks like xampp may be a bit easier.

I try to be as helpful as possible, but I'm not one for hand-holding. I'm a little impatient and would rather just fix a problem myself, rather than try to blindly instruct someone else.

Again, thoroughly read the manuals on the Apache site, if you don't want to use one of those One-Clicks olutions.

I tried xampp, and it works excellently. No hassles.

And especially if you are looking for help, you need to provide as much info as you possibly can. Start by answering all of the questions I've asked. List your system information as well as how you connect to the internet.

The programs I listed both run apache , might be worth it to install them and poke around a little to familiarize yourself. They come pre-configured. One thing to be aware is you do not want to use them live. They are not meant for that. Running a server properly is by no means something that can be explained fully in a forum there's too many and's, if's and but's. As suggested thoroughly read the documentation.
