  1. are there any out there that are worth $50 and built to last or will i have to up the amount? i would very rarely be using it and only watch the occasional movie or tv show. retail, no burns.

You won't get much for $50, especially if you expect longevity. Helios is bringing out a new player for $99, or better yet there are Oppos for $150.

I'm with Grain, I don't think a $50 DVD player will last very long, but then again if you don't use it very often, maybe.

BB has 5 players listed under $50, might be worth checking them out if there's a store near you. I have no experience with any of 'em.

    My 2 cents,
    Jim

  4. Look for a used Sony DVP-NS75H or DVP-NS55P on eBay

They are very good units and are affordable

actually Philips DVP-5140 is a great option, you'll get the support of Xvid/DivX with packed bitstream without any problems, QPel is supported, B-Vop is supported at 3 as max, VPR is well supported, high bitrate is supported also , a huge support for most type of subtitles like idx, srt, and much much more

the only missing thing is HDMI outpot whtich I don't care of because I don't have HDTV

and this is all with the officially frimware, you'll get more with hacked one

    check other features here:

Toshiba usually has some on sale in this price range, especially during various holiday sales.
