Basically I am transfering some home video (ntsc avi, with Adobe Premiere) to DVD, and need to send some to UK. The player they have there is JVC XV-s302...which may or may not play ntsc dvds...I am going to send some test discs to find out....

Hi, I have read many of the informative and detailed conversion guides listed on this site...they are very helpful....
my question is this: What is the best point at which to do the conversion if i am converting to PAL?
should i capture the avi and render as PAL right away (which can be done in Adobe Premiere)...
or build the DVD and then convert the entire DVD to PAL?

or is it the same thing??

    thanks for any advice...

No, not the same thing. If by convert the entire DVD to PAL you mean menus and all, and not just the video, then unless you're pretty knowledgeable, you'll find this a nearly impossible task. Make the PAL DVD from the beginning.

And you can almost bet that they can already play NTSC DVDs. Surely they or some of their friends already have at least one NTSC DVD with which to test. Here are some comments about that player from the database on this site:

actually i will not be having menus, just to keep it simple i think im just going to have the DVD play the file automatically...

in this case, is it still better to convert the orig AVI, instead of the rendered DVD?

also, the guide which i was going to follow, mentions to use TMPGEPlus...which is no longer freeware i think...is there a freeware app i can use to convert the avi?

    thanks

Freeware encoders HCenc, Quenc, Freeenc, bbmpeg... These and many others found here

All in one avi to dvd converters. Avi2Dvd (does ntsc to pal and vice versa conversions), Old divx2dvd, DIKO, FAVC.....All found here

Look in the tools section to the left.

I agree with manono. Make the dvd pal from the begining...or leave it ntsc if there player can handle it. Most pal equipment will play ntsc.
