I know xvid is supposed to be able to handle divx file but I found a file and gspot says it a div3 file. i looked it up and I need divx for this. i have the newest version of xvid. Is this a newer version file that xvid can't handle? I was also wondering if divx can handle all xvid encoded videos?

  2. Div3 is a very old version of divx. Xvid does not decode it. I think the latest Divx codec will decode div3. If not there is an old version of Divx 3 referenced in the tools section. Ffdshow can also decode div3.

Yes, Divx can decode Xvid files.

Xvid is an MPEG-4 decoder; DivX3 is not MPEG-4 so it can't handle it. There is a modified build of ffmpeg though that can losslessly convert MS MPEG-4 V3/DivX3 to ISO MPEG-4.
