I'm almost sure that they are not available. I was wanting some myself, but I just get blank looks from everybody.

We talked about this recently. Where there was an awful lot of talk about this, NOBODY anywhere in the world has these discs for sale yet. A few guys found websites that advertised them, but the websites all said something like "Coming Soon". Do note that these discs have been promised for over a year now, so "Coming Soon" may well mean "Never" in reality. Our best guess is that they are a lot harder to manufacture than the companies realized.

There are rumors that you MAY need new burners for these discs. Apparently the DVD+RW DL format will almost certainly require a new burner. The DVD-RW DL may work with existing burners. All is speculation until discs are actually available. Expect the price to be quite high, if they ever come out.

I am suspicious that these discs may be incredibly difficult to manufacture. DVD+R DL discs at first were said to have defect rates of 50% on the manufacturing line, which is sky high. That means that 50% of what came off the line was thrown away as defective and never sold. I suspect that rewriteable DL discs may have defect rates of 80% or more. If I'm right, the defect rates may be too high to make these practical to sell as that kind of defect rate would cause the discs to be priced at least at $10 a disc, maybe even $15 or more. It could also be that getting one prototype to work wasn't as tough as mass producing them has proven to be. I don't expect to see any rewriteable DL discs this year if ever.

depends on where the defect is, top layer or second layer, i suspect many failed DL make into the market as SL discs

when floppy disc ruled mfg ran media tests, if a batched failed to meet top grade top , top price, max capability, Double sided etc

they where downgraded and marked and sold as what ever grade/tests they did pass

the same for memory chips and speed response, and some mfg do this with CPUs, if half of a P4s onboard memory cache fails, it might be sold as a P3 or a celereon, the mfg product will NOT be discarded with out trying to sell it in some form of retail or wholesale market, only the totally inoperable un-useable product makes it into the scrap/recycle bin

i expect many lessor grade DVD discs make it to the market re-labeled or MIS-labled

the 'never sold' is not an option with mfg

    consumer beware
