Hey,
Can someone either tell me or post a link where I can detailed information on how to transfer files from my TIVO to my PC ? There looks to be a USB port on the back of my Series 2 single tuner Tivo DVR. But It's the flat female plug like on the back of a PC.....as in I think I might be able to hook a controlling device such as a mouse into it but not an out to my pc directly ? Any ideas on this?
I read about the USB wireless adapter and using tivo2go but I want to try and avoid having to buy more add ons for the damn thing. I guess if someone knows the most cheapest simplest way to accomplish moving files from it to my PC I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks guys.

Try Tivo.com. They provide the software and support for transferring files. There is no other way that I am aware of.

You would have to hack it, but im not going to get into that. Tivo.com isn't going to give you what you want

The only thing the Tivo will recognize in the USB slot is a NIC. There is an approved list of NIC's in the manual and on the website. You then attach the Tivo to your home network and it is then able to download updates (OS and guide info) across the network instead of phone line. You will then also have access to the Tivo from your pc using the software supplied by Tivo (located on tivo.com).

THANKS! Now I just have to find one of those USB to Ethernet cables.
Fry's probably has it.

Tivo has a built-in web server. You can access it by going to your browser of choice and typing in the address field, https://your-tivo-ip/nowplaying/index.html

to decode your tivo stream to an unprotected mpg,
windows users get "direct show dump"
linux users get "tivodecode"
happy downloading!!!
PS user name is "tivo"
password is "your tivo media code""The software said Win XP or better, so I Installed Linux" -
Eh, I hope this isn't a dumb question.....but my cable modem has the small square input for a USB connection - as opposed to the normal rectangle flat end that usually connect in on the computer. Can you hook the cable modem into the TV and let the modem be the mediator between a connection from your PC and the Tivo?
I am thinking no but, just wanted to see.

That small square on a cable modem is for people who's PC does not have a nic card. Tivos usb connector is only for transmission of a wireless internet signal to do updates of guides and such.
One needs a wireless router, so that the tivo gets assigned an ip address and a usb 2.0 usb adapter so it can receive the wire less signal"The software said Win XP or better, so I Installed Linux" -
Depending on where your Tivo is located, you can use a regular RJ45 router as opposed to a wireless model. Either one will work.

You need a Linksys 2000M (something like that, or equivalent) for adapting the USB to an Ethernet port then connect to your router.
TIVO.COM in the support pages should also tell you exactly what make/models addapters they support. It makes a difference to get this working, or not.
DOing it tthis way, you don't need to worry how long the cable is. USB has a limited length unless you power it for some more distance.
If you want to do it wireless - reccommend you get TIVO's wireless antenna at Best Buy.
Once you get connected, you need (maybe) the Tivo Desktop software (free) to download vid to your PC.
Or search for GALLEON (also free) to schedule downloads.
[EDIT] P.S. You have to create an account on TIVO.COM to update your account/profile to turn on the MRV/TTG (multi-room viewing and Tivo-To-Go) functions. THey are not switched on when your account is first made. You have to set this.Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.) -

Or can you use a regular cat5 ethernet cable (non cross over)
I don't have a home network setup, no router or wireless or anything like that.
Thanks!

Two posts from the Help forum at Tivo.com:
using a usb to ethernet adapter you could connect an ethernet cable from the adapter plugged into your tivo usb port and the computer's ethernet port.
it's possible but not worth the trouble. putting a router in the middle makes things work much better.
You can not connect your Tivo to your PC directly via USB. The USB ports are only for attaching a network adapter.
You could create a peer to peer connection if your laptop has an Ethernet jack. You would need a crossover Ethernet cable (not a standard patch cable) and an approved USB wired Ethernet adapter for the Tivo. For a list of approved adapters, see www.tivo.com/adapters and click on view all wired adapters.
Depending on what kind of network you have, and what you want to do, it might be simpler to hook the Tivo and the PC to a router. Let us know if you have a home network, broadband internet access, and what you want to do, for example, transfer programs to your laptop, get Tivo updates over the internet, etcGoogle is your Friend -
Hiya,
Thanks for getting back to me. All that I am trying to do is move the tivo files off my tivo and onto my PC for playback and or DVD burning.....as cheaply as possible
I don't have home network, router, switch of any sort.
It was my understanding that you could plug in a USB to ETHERNET convertor, which essentially turns a USB port into a RJ45 port. Then plug a cable (cross over I guess) into the converted port and directly into your PC or Laptops Ethernet port. Then do your copying.
Is this right? I hope this helps.
Thanks.

You must have a router, if you plugged in cables directly how would your system "see" the tivo?? and viceaversa?? The tivo really is just another computer which runs Linux as an O/S. the router will assign the tivo an ip address, then you can access the built in web server of tivo. Router cost ca. $50 US and a usb adapter about the same. If you plan to pull alot of programs off your tivo then the cost is worth it, plus having a NAT router gives you built-in hardware firewall which is another plus. Sorry, thats just how it is.

Your question was answered in my last post above with information from Tivo.com as I stated in my very first post.

Yeah, I saw that also. This post has gotten so way out of hand that I forgot where I was. DOH.
