I was given a defective polaroid drm-2001g to look at.
A grinding noise can be heard after loading a dvd,and the dvd wasn't detected.
It was only 8 months old but out of warranty.I popped the cover and took the dvd
drive out.I took the top off and noticed for some reason the ribbon to the laser
popped up and was actually making contact with the dvd.The ribbon was ground
down to the copper conductors.I taped the ribbon down (bandaid fix) and made
a power adapter so I could stick it in my pc.Winxp recognized it as a phillips SHDAV60000,
and I was able to read a cd and burn a dvd using the pc.I stuck it back in the polaroid, and it recognized a dvd I stuck in and started to play.Question:can any pc type ide dvd burner be stuck in to replace the defective drive?Or does it have to be a phillips with the same type case?I couldn't find any info on that model dvd drive.

I also suspect it has to be the same drive. Just as Windows needs specific drivers for different drives, there must be a software/firmware component to the drm-2001g specifically to match the given drive.

I temporarily put a BTC 1004 in a Polaroid, and it worked fine. Various drives work fine. Pioneer and NEC do not.

The Polaroid is a great big piece of shit, with large numbers of them failing. I don't recall any DVD recorders ever having that many problems, except maybe the Apex DRX-9000 and it's exploding PSU and IRE flicker.

You'd do best to toss it and get something better. This machine is not worth your time. It's a cheaply-made piece of crap, Walmart quality at its finest.

The owner gave me a benq dw1670 to try.
I had an old pc power supply with a long floppy power cable and long hd power cable
    that I salvaged.
I mated the two cables and used cut common pins to mate with the existing dvd power connector.
I stuck in a longer ide cable and tried the benq. It played a dvd fine so I will give it back to the owner to test further. Not pretty, but better than original.
