    Hi there

This is the story... Bought a streaming media centre so I can access the PC in my spare room from my plasma in the lounge. I want to RIP all my DVD's onto the PC and bin them.

Thing is..... I don't know where to bloody start. I have tried a few bits of software following replys to previous threads from other people on here. All they seem to do is just rip the .VOB files onto my PC. I want to just RIP the movies off the DVD's in a recognisable format that my media centre will recognise you know, .avi or .mpeg.

Another problem is... I don't know the difference between avi, mpeg or divx. What's the point, which one is best for me?

I just want a PERFECT copy of my movies to be saved on my HDD for access from my Telly.

Can someone please explain the benefits for different file types, advise which one I should strive for and what software I should use. I did find a bit of software that I THINK converted them to AVI but it asked for some many parameters and settings I just didnt understand I gave up. Is there one for idiots like me with some nice little wizards that do all the settings for ya??

    Please help

    Regards

    James

    What media center is it?

    AVI Divx/Xvid/H264
Install AnyDVD and you can rip and convert directly to one avi divx/xvid using FairUse Wizard or AutoGK. About 1GB/movie, some video quality loss.

    MPG
You could also use VOB2MPG to get the main movie as one mpg. About 4-7GB/movie, no video conversion no quality loss.

But I still don't know why most media centers can't support dvds on hdds(vob, ifo, bup files), no need for any conversion, you can keep all extra material....thats why I use a HTPC!

And have you tried any streaming tools like Tversity? It streams directly to your media center.

If you want PERFECT copies on your HDD, you'll need to rip the complete DVD to the hard drive without converting at all. This'll take up between 3 to 8 GB per DVD. Space can be saved by only saving the main movie to your hard disk, and discarding any extras and un-needed soundtracks subtitles etc.

Right ripped them, didnt realise my D-Link meadi streamer can play .vob files, been messing about with vob2mpeg & divx converter, both pretty good programmes. Only problem now though is.... You can't skip through the movie or skip back like you can with a DVD or windows media player with the slider at the bottom.

Does anyone know if you can add markers to a movie file?

    Regards

  7. Try using a decent player like Media Player Classic, KMPlayer, VLC. If you rip with DVDDecrypter in ISO mode you can even keep the menus.

See this is the problem!, the above comment is alien to me?!?!?! What is ISO mode.

Also.... How can I use Media Player Classic, KMplayer or VLC. I'm trying to watch the movies through my TV which obviously uses the software interface built into my D Link media streamer, I can't use a different bit of software.., Can I?

Cheers for the ongoing help, I will go buy Maximum PC too cheers

  10. ISO mode in DVD Decrypter creates a ISO image of the DVD -- a single file that contains everything on the DVD.

But I misread your earlier message. I thought WMP was giving you the problem where you couldn't seek. With the Dlink media player you're you're stuck with what it supports. You'll probably have to convert to a format it likes.
