    Hi,

I use VirtualDubMod to convert a vob file[DVD] to Xvid[AVI]. Everything seems to go well. When I playback the Xvid file audio+video are ok. But when I try to import the Xvid file to Premiere the audio doesn't get imported... Any ideas?

What audio format? Xvid is a video codec only. Got nothing to do with audio. If you are encoding for Premiere though, I wouldn't go with Xvid for video either. Not really the best solution for editing.

I also edit with Premiere and have the same problem. What codec should I use to rip a DVD then? I'm looking for highest quality.

I'm in a bind with this project and could really use the help. Thanks!

Highest quality means a lossless codec.

Though I don't use Premiere, I do use DV AVI most often for editing. Not lossless, but very easy to edit and about 13GB per hour filesize. You can use VirtualDub Mod to convert to the format after you install a DV codec.

Well Xvid and DivX are not lossless.

Huffyuv or Lagarith are often used around here. There are others, but these seem to be the most popular.

    I'm new.

I used DVD Decrypter to copy a home-made DVD to *.VOB, *.IFO and *.BUP files. Then I convert the VOB files to *.avi files using AutoGK.

I did Preview in AutoGK to make sure both audio and video are OK. But audio is missing from the resulting AVI files. Need help.

eckoze@yahoo.com, try using Gspot 2.70 on the VOB files to see if the audio is there and what format it's in. You may not have the proper codec installed. I'm thinking AC3. Maybe install the AC3 ACM Decompressor?

    And welcome to our forums.

The audio is there. I can play the VOB files in Windows Media Player and have normal audio. After I installed AC3Filter, I can play the avi files generated from those VOBs with audio. The audio files are in AC3 format.

I tried to edit those generated avi files using Studio 8. In Studio 8 story board, I see the sound track as a straight line as opposed to normal sound track with picks & dips. There is no audio sound when playing in Studio 8. Therefore, I can't edit it.

I copied a commercial DVD, then generated avi files from its VOB files. Those avi files show exactly the same problem.

Do you still think I need use Gspot? Or should I install AC3 ACM Decompressor?

    Kind regards,
    Wendy

The audio works in Adobe Premier Pro 2.0. The missing audio problem still exists in Studio 8 though.

You can use VirtualDub MPEG-2 and AC-3 ACM Codec (for the audio). Both are freewares and you can find here on VideoHelp.

I wrote a brief tutorial about how to convert vob to avi using VirtualDub MPEG-2:

I hope it works for you.
