I’ve been trying to convert several .AVI files to DVD format and burn them to a disk. Problem is, the conversion hangs within the first 2 minutes.

It is epidemic, I have tried several different source files, both .AVI and .MPGs and I’ve tried several different programs (Nero Vision, DVD Flick, Cyberlink, Womble DVD wizard) They all hang once they start encoding the video portion, usually I need to reboot.

I figure it is a codec problem, since that is only common element, but darned if I can figure out which one. Any suggestions?

I've got a tarball of the DVD flick output if that is of any use. There are no errors I can see, happily goes along until BOOM...

    Thanks

Try the convertXtoDVD. Works great. As for codec problem download KLcodec ful pack. This has all the codec's you'll need. And it usually will uninstall damaged codecs as it replaces them.

    Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not install a codec pack. That way lies madness.

If you think you have broken codecs, use Codec Sniper or Filmerit to find them and remove them. If you think you have missing codecs, use G-spot to identify what you need and install only those codecs as required.

No one can convince you to stop using anything...just know the more codecs you install the more probs will arise sooner or later....

This is the key thing. Sure, a codec pack may give you the *one* codec you need, but it will also load up a whole lot you don't need, some of which may create video viewing/decoding problems that you didn't have before. Why anyone would want to download and install something 98% of which they neither want or need is beyond me.

(Poor analogy): Kinda like trying to kill a fly with a shotgun. Sure, you may kill it, but you're almost guaranteed to do significant damage to your house A better choice would be a flyswatter and some patience - task accomplished.

    My 2 cents,
    Jim

Your answers make sense. Most of the video I like to convert are xvid files. So i guess most of all the other codecs are just useless to me. So i think i'll uninstall KLcodec and use the g-spot tool recomended above to see what i need. Thanks.
