trying to post videos to a site that only allows a .mpg extension. No idea why it is not taking .mov

How do i make the conversion for free. I have quicktime pro and final cut pro.

Your version Final Cut Pro may have come with Compressor. If so, there is a setting for MPEG1 in there. You can tweak the bitrate for web use.

Yes, if the site says that it will only accept mpg, then that pretty much explains why it is rejecting mov.

There are many, many tools that will convert into mpg, with various tradeoffs among speed, ease of use, cost, bugginess, etc: ffmpeg (free; command-line), ffmpegx (shareware; gui), movie2mpeg (buggy; mpeg-1 only), MissingMpegTools (free; works well). My favorite: MPEG Streamclip (free; very polished).

    Those are just a few.

  5. Obviously the OP wanted to encode MPEG1, right?

Compressor might be his best option if he already has FCP.

Also Toast can be used to encode MPEG1: just make a VCD project and Save As Disk Image... Mount the disk image and copy the /MPEGAV/*.DAT to the desktop and rename it as *mpg.

AFAIK the DAT file is something close to the multiplexed mpeg. The blank multiplexed MPEG have no navigation information.

Some MPEG1/2 encoders are listed here:

    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/SVCD_on_a_Macintosh.html#Encode

BTW, MPEG Streamclip can't encode MPEG1/2 -- it can only decode it to other codecs or multiplex or demultiplex it.

It is indeed most reasonable to assume that he wants to encode into MPEG1 (.mpg extension and all that), but since he didn't explicitly say so, I listed a bunch of tools that can encode into some type of MPEG1/2/4, just in case. I assume he's smart enough to know what he ultimately wants, and will read at least a summary of what each tool does, and choose appropriately.

Btw, renaming .dat to .mpg does usually work, but not always. If he goes that route, for maximum playability, I'd recommend using something like VCDgear to strip off the unwanted bits to convert the .dat to a truly compliant .mpg.

well here is the site yideoz.com all the site says when you upload any video is that they want a .mpg test it out and then let me know what exactly they are looking for. I tried to look in compressor and I couldn't find the setting you were talking about I do see mpeg3 and 4 but that obviously is not the right ones.

FCP/Compressor should have the MPG1 option; hunt for it -- it should be there, somewhere.

If your hunt is unsuccessful for some reason, go to the URL Matti linked to in his post for a pretty complete overview of tool options. His site has a wealth of information.

Just to give you a specific starting point, see http://www.angelfire.com/mac/rnc/files/MMT.html. MissingMpegTools is free. The underlying engine, mpeg2enc, is also used by ffmpegx, among others.
