Hi.
Thx for a great forum. I hope you can help me on this one.
I have a homemade movie (AVI), which I would like to add permanent subtitles to. Is there any way for me to do this without a great loss of quality? I would like to end up with an AVI-file as well.
I hope to hear from you.
Thx a lot![]()

https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=272736 but save as dv-avi, huffyuv avi and you wont lose that much quality.
But what is your goal with the final avi? make dvd? make avi/divx? or something else? -
Thanx for your reply - I will try with VobSub.
The thing is that I have produced a low budget shortfilm, which I intend to send to different festival - so therefore I need to have both an original film, and a subtitled film on the DVD that I am going to send out.
After browsing through the forum, I found that making a DVD with 2 versions of the film would make the process easier for me!
To have the least loss of quality I figured that I would need an uncompressed AVI of the film.
To the AVI I would like to add permanent subtitles, so I then have 2 AVI files - 1 with subtitles and 1 without.
Using DVD-LAB I will put these two films onto a DVD with a simple menu choosing between the 2 versions.
I have the subtitles as SUB and SRT files and I need to resynch them to the film before adding them permanent to the AVI.
I hope this give a better idea about what I intend to do and if I am on the wright track
Thx again for your help. -

No it won't. Make only one version and author it with selectable subtitles. They can be turned on if needed and turned off if not needed. You can even make one version with them turned on by default. Burned in subs is stupid for DVD when it's just as easy to make them selectable. Just have a subtitle menu where the person watching can turn on the subs if needed.

Did you leave out a step? What about the part where you convert the AVI to DVD compliant MPEG-2? DVD-Lab won't do it. It's an authoring program, not an encoder. -
any good ideas for a decoder?
It's an encoder you want. CCE is commercial, and I'd recommend it frameserved using an AviSynth script file. It will take the AVI directly, though. HCEnc is free and very good, but will only take your AVI frameserved with an AviSynth script file. There are other encoders. There are guides on the left for different encoders and some all-in-one apps such as DVD Flick or ConvertX2DVD.
