  1. Hi Folks,

Well I've done a considerable amount of searching the net for information and software to make a VCD 2.0 MPEG stills from JPG's. I can't seem to find any quality software that can do the COMPLETE job.

I'm looking for software that can make a VCD/SVCD slide slows from jpg stills at 704x480 (NTSC) with transitions, music and text.

Nero does a OUTSTANDING job making the VCD/SVCD stills at 704X480 but no sound, music or text. The pictures are as good as DVD quality on a TV.

Most of the other software I've tried (including Studio and DC10Plus) can make the stills into a movie mpg with transitions but the format is at best SVCD at 480x480 (NTSC) considerably inferior video quality compared to the 704X480.

ULEAD DVD Picture Show does a good job but no transistions and I don't want the menu's (for now)to stop the slide slow.

I'm running out a of time, I have to put together a slide show of about 500 pictures to run in the background for my 30th wedding anniversary or else...(if you know what I mean)

Please can anyone recommend any software that can do the complete job??

What you want to do is possible with VCD2.0 if you figure out how to generate your own xml and use VCDImager. The only limitation is that you can't change from one still to another in the middle of an audio-only mpg. So if you want to play a song while switching stills, you got a big problem and the best alternative would be to make it SVCD motion video. If you just want to make a short commentary for each pic then this mght work.

You can put all your stills and audio into the SPI (segment area of a vcd allows non-standard audio and video). Convert each still from a jpg or bmp to an mpg with tmpgenc and create all your audio-only mpegs. When the PBC switches to an audio-only mpg, the last video frame remains on the screen. If you don't want audio for some stills, you can program it to leave it onscreen for so many seconds then switch to the next frame. If you've got 500 pics, that's one helluva file management problem you've got there.

  5. Can you help - or direct me to someone who can?
Does colour of cd's make a difference?
    My problem is..........
I PURCHASED ULEAD DVD PICTURESHOW ALONG WITH BACKUP CD
HOWEVER THE FINISHED CD WILL NOT PLAY ON ANY DVD PLAYER EXCEPT TEAC DV-3000. HOW DID YOU GET ON - ANY HINTS - I AM WELL PLEASED WITH THE FINISHED PRODUCT, INCLUDING MENUS,SOUND ETC. WHAT CD'S DID YOU USE? ANY HINTS FOR ME ?

I HAVE A CLIENT WHO IS A PANASONIC/JVC MAIN DEALER IN THE U.K. & HE SUPPLIED ME WITH A PANASONIC DVD PLAYER BUT IT WOULD NOT PLAY FINISHED CD'S SO HE TRIED EVERY DVD PLAYER IN SHOWROOM & ONLY PLAYED IN THE TEAC, WHICH HE SWOPPED FOR ME.

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY IT CAN ONLY BE PLAYED IN THIS ONE DVD PLAYER AS MY SON & FRIENDS HAVE OTHER MAKES & THE IDEA WAS THAT I COULD SHOW MY DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS ONLY BY THIS MEANS.

IT IS BEING PRODUCED ON A MAXDATA 700GHZ, 256MB MEMORY, 10GB HDD, ACER CD-REWRITER SO AS A COMPUTER CONSULTANT I SEE NO COMPUTER SIDED PROBLEM. AN EARLY REPONSE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED AS WE ARE ALL BAFFLED.

    dinesh,

if you want a transition betwwen the stills, it must be VCD or SVCD or DVD video instead of a slide show. only the DVD resolution 720x480 can have similar quality to the VCD slideshow. A 720x480 DVD quality VCD (or SVCD) is about 20min, so if you want to burn 500 pictures in 1 CD, each picture only has 20*60/500=2.4s, which is too fast. If 1 CD with high quality(I believe you want) is a must choice, you have to use VCD slideshow, which has no transition!!!

one of the big disadvantages of VCD slideshow with background music is that you can not fast forward nor fast reverse the slide show, and the goto function does not work neither.

I have ever made a 800-photo VCD slide show using videopack5 with background music. In order to make it perform as ff and goto, I made ~30 chapters, so that I can user ->|, |<- button to jump. Using this method, you do not have to wait for 40 min to review the end part of the slideshow.

    hope this helps.

  8. Apologies for caps lock on prior
Been to web sites - informative
What make of cd's do you use to make VCD to play in DVD standalone player ?
Is the finish colour a reason for my VCD's only playing in Teac DVD standalone player?
They also play o.k. using PowerDVD on my computer
Other people are making VCD's and not being restricted to one player.
Does DirectX make a difference ? I was told to use V8+ by Ulead DVDPictureshow !
Does anything else need to be checked in the burning side?
Appreciate any help you can give
    Thanks

I used Premier to create a slide show with transitons and multiple audio tracks. Then used TMPG to encode it to SVCD.

  10. markdf,

There are a number of packages that can create a lo-res motion MPEG file with transitions, Premier is one.

APR50, however, is looking for a tool that does hi-res motion MPEG with transitions for VCD/SVCD.

Such a tool does not exist because hi-res motion MPEG is not supported by the VCD/SVCD spec.

For what he wants, he needs to use a DVD authoring tool, such as VideoPack 5.
