My problems started after I installed the latest k-lite in an attempt to get a movie to play (because WMP said it did not have the codec). Now I cannot get AVI sound in Windows Media Player 10 or 11 no matter what I try. These files play fine in Media Player Classic.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled k-lite, xvid, divx, and WMP 10 and 11 several times, but nothing has worked. I of course made these efforts separate of each other to try to isolate the problem.

MP3's play fine. WMA's play fine. Quicktime files are fine, of course.

Any recommendations would be extremely helpful! I would, of course, like to avoid a repair of Windows because I had to reaquire licenses in the past

If you had read about codec packs before installing one, you'd avoided lots of trouble. They are notorious for hosing your media playback capabilities.
Get something like Codec Sniper, remove every codec you see not belonging to the default Windows codecs.
For a video that wont play, use GSpot to tell what codec it uses - then install latest build of that (and only that) codec.
On an otherwise clean system, just installing ffdshow will enable you to play a vast majority of media files.

And this is why sensible people say 'friends don't let friends install codec packs'

When WMP (or any software) says it is missing a codec, step one is to determine what codec is missing. Tools like g-spot and avicodec can help you here. Then locate and install just that codec.

In the meantime, you might get lucky and fix the problem - or you might be screwed and have to re-install windows.

Start with uninstalling all codecs and/or packs listed in add/remove programs. Use Codec Sniper to remove anything that appears to be broken. Also try Filmerit. it's more complicated, but works at a deeper level.

Finally, use VLC instead of WMP.
