I'm looking for a term so I can effectively search for a proper solution. So far I've been coming up short.

Here is the issue. After encoding with TMPGEnc following this This Guide, the dvd plays fine in the computer as expected, but in the standalone every second or half second there is a 1 second pause in both video and audio then the video resumes for a second or two and repeats; over and over. My question is - is there a term commonly used for this that could aid my search for a solution and future reference (jittery playback, jumpy playback, pause in audio/video on playback etc haven't come up with anything).

I'm guessing it has something to do with the frame rate. The original Xvid has 23.976fps and I encoded using "3:2 Pulldown when playback" to get "23.976 fps (internally 29.97fps)" as per the guide mentioned above. Maybe I should have left it at 23.976fps for the encode? from my limited understanding, 23.976 is a supported NTSC format as well.

23.976 is a compliant framerate only when 2:3 or 3:2 pulldown is applied to enable 29.97 fps display. What you are describing usually occurs when framerate conversion has been done badly, such as encoding 23.976 fps to 25 or 29.97 fps. If done badly, duplicate frames can cause this type of pausing.

if you have encoded as 23.976 with pulldown then you should not be seeing this type of issue.

I'll try it again but use CCE and see if I get a proper playback.

Again, encode at 23.976 with 2:3 pulldown.

Thanks, tried it with CCE SE 2.7 doing a 2:3 pulldown then again with a 3:2 pull down. Still choppy, but not as often as the Tempgenc encode. I guess, I'm back off to the drawing board.

  6. MP2 audio can cause that type problem in some players. Although it's supposed to be valid for PAL DVD players.
