  1. Guys something went wrong with my registry and I somehow lost all my settings for virtualdub, and lost a codec or something. Now when I try to play a minidv file I get "cannot locate decompressor". I convert the minidv files to xvid to watch on my pc. An example of the stats of the files are Bitrate 5566 kb, fps 29.97, 0.569 bits/pixel, at 680*480. I cant remember what I was using to achieve this I think it may have been 1-pass quantizer and quantizer set at 3. Does this sound right? This is driving me crazy, I HATE when little stuff like this happens.

If that's your Xvid bitrate, Bitrate 5566 kb, that seems very high. But you could install a new DV codec like the Panasonic DV codec for your VirtualDub problem.

  3. Is that a bad thing that its that high? That "cannot locate decompressor" is happening with virtualdub and any media player I use. Yep! that codec fixed that problem, thanks.

I don't know if it's bad. It just that most of the Xvid files I see are about 500 - 900Kbps. Of course those are 700MB videos that are not great quality. I haven't seen Xvids much above 1500Kbps. 5500Kbps is more common with MPEG-2 videos. But from a DV or HDDV source converted to Xvid, it may be more common.

I would install the DV codec and see if it will work for you. It should at least allow you to open DVs with VirtualDub.
