I just recently got a DVD Burner and a friend set me up with DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. They work great but I have to rebot every time I rune one of the programs because the next time I run the same program or the other I get a lock message.

When looking at the 2 programs they seem to not be updated any more. I was wondering if someone could recommend 2 newer programs that do the same thing or maybe one program that does what both Decryptor and Shrink does?

    Thanks

What seems to be the best combination at present that works on about any DVD for backups is: RipIt4Me>DVD Shrink>ImgBurn. RipIt4Me incorporates DVD Decrypter and several other programs and will feed directly into Shrink.

The is also a modified version of Shrink that uses ImgBurn to automatically burn the DVD. ImgBurn is kept updated. These are all freeware programs. Link to modified Shrink page: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=63869

How exactly do you "rip" a dvd so that I can save it on my harddrive? (I'm fairly new to burning so be explicit please)

AMLOM, Usually 'ripping' a DVD means transferring it to your computer hard drive. Since most all commercial DVDs are encrypted, it also usually means decrypting it. The newer DVDs, especially the Sony DVDs, use more advanced encryption and DVD Shrink by itself can't handle them. You need a newer or more advanced program. That's where RipIt4Me comes in. DVDFab Decrypter also works for most newer DVDs.

And since most commercial DVDs are in the 7GB size range, they need to be resized to fit on a regular DVD-5 disc. That's what DVD Shrink does. It 'transcodes' the video to remove information that you probably won't really miss. It will always be lower quality than the original DVD, but also half the size.

You can fit most any commercial DVD directly on a dual layer disc (DVD-9) after decrypting, but burning them is problematic sometimes and they are expensive.

There are other methods besides 'shrinking'. You can re-encode the DVD to a smaller size and this is usually the best for quality. But it does take quite a bit more time.

Finally the speed of any of these processes are directly related to your CPU speed. Memory, hard drives and the rest of the computer don't have much bearing on the time to transcode or encode.

That's probably more than you wanted to know.

You mentioned you can re-encode the DVD to a smaller size instead of using DVD Shrink. Can you recommend a re-encode program?

    Thanks

The solution to your "lock" problem, is most likely because after ripping the disc with dvd decrypter, you are leaving the program open and then trying to use DVDShrink. If the app is still open, the ripped files are "locked" because they are still in use by DVD Decrypter. Just rip the disc and then close DVD Decrytpor.

As everyone else has already stated, DVD Decrypter is outdated and won't work on many/most newer titles without assistance. I switched to DVDFab Decrypter. It is updated often and works on everything I have ripped.

I find myself using RipIT4Me more and more. The only disc of recent release that gave it trouble was Attack Force - and how! Hats off to those guys, because they stayed at it and updated the program until it worked. DVDFabDecryptor is also nice, free, updated often; and the new GUI is a lot nicer than before. If using DVDFabDecryptor, I would go ahead and run FixVTS on the ripped files: I've had an occassional one slip by that needed it. Out of the box, ANYDvd can rip, and did successfully rip Attack Force for me. It also gets very frequent updates, but is not cheap ($39) for a ripper/region tool.

Could you give me step by step instructions on how to download and use ripit4me? I can burn and convert with no problem, but don't know anything about how to use the ripit4me program.
I appreciate any advice and instruction you can give

AMLOM, there is a great step by step guide at the RipIt4Me site:
    http://www.ripit4me.org/guide.html

I've only used RipIt4Me a couple of times, but all I know about using it was from that guide. It's easy, and it works great.

Yes, if you don't already have them.

I doubt I can do better than the guide. Just follow the guide step by step. Start at Step 1 - Installation and go from there. I happened to have used "Wizard Mode", BTW (you'll see the choice of that or "1-Click Mode" when you get to Step 2).

OK< I have all three programs. Now, do you recommend 1 touch or wizard mode? Do I have to do anything with the other two programs or does ripit4me do it all?

It depends. 1 click is easiest if you want to back up the whole disc, wizard lets you pick out just the movie (or movie and menu, if I remember correctly). Once you have RipIt4Me start the process, that's it. Leave it for a few minutes and come back. RipIt4Me opens and closes the programs as it uses them. If you don't have DVDShrink set to burn it to a disc, then you will have to burn it after RipIt4Me is done. Otherwise if DVDShrink is set-up to burn it to a disc after it shrinks it, then you don't need to do anything else.

Try ImgBurn instead. Or you should be able to use DVD Decrypter to burn as you should already have it installed. For the ImgBurn version of Shrink, see my earlier post.

With Shrink, if you uncheck Nero, it will ask you later for another burning program.

SS_Video_Newb, Sorry, I missed your second post and your question :
You mentioned you can re-encode the DVD to a smaller size instead of using DVD Shrink. Can you recommend a re-encode program?

    Thanks
Take a look at DVD Rebuilder. It re-encodes the video to a lower bitrate, which with a longer movie may be the better choice than DVD Shrink. It will take longer, though.

I used it for the first time today and I don't know what the heck went on. It put the movie into a file, but I couldn't burn it. It didn't ask me for anything. It told me where the file was, but it was huge. I don't know what to do. It tooka 946mb clip and made it 4.2 gigs. Help Please!!! (Step by step if possible) I used the "1 click wizard to do all of it for me.

    The guide isn't online. It's a 404 not found.

I'm guessing that the output was a .ISO file ? If so, that's fine. You can now just load up IMGBurn, make sure you';re in burn mode, press the open button, and point it to your ISO file. Press go and it should do the rest. If in doubt, I'm sure there's heaps of guides on how to burn with IMGBurn - you may need to hunt around a little.

Just reading back through the thread though, I'm not exactly sure what it is you're trying to do.

Start from the beginning, and take baby-steps.

What do you have ? (a DVD I'm guessing)
What do you want to do ? (rip it to my hard drive)
Then what ? (burn it to a DVDR)
Is the original Single Layer or Dual Layer ?
If Dual Layer, what do you want to burn it to ? (Single Layer or Dual Layer)
    If in doubt, Google it.

I want to burn a DVD, rip it to my hard drive, then burn it to a DVDR. After that...UGHHH!! I don't know what an ISO file is. I don't know if the disc is single or dual. All I want to do is burn it to a "DVD-R 1-16x 4.7GB disc. It told me the file was too big. Surprise, surprise. I'm so lost! I get an "error occured while creating the cd/dvd"

Read the guides on how to back up a DVD movie. There are many guides on the left <<<<<.
Rip your dvd to your hard drive first using DVD FAB DECRYPTER. Then if you're using a SINGLE LAYER DVD disc that can only hold 4gbs then you'll need to use DVD SHRINK so it'll be able to fit on that SINGLE LAYER DISC.

Below is a guide you can use for DVD SHRINK. Just use DVD FAB DECRYPTER to rip the dvd files to your hard drive instead of DVD DECRYPTER since that program is no longer updated.

    http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

You can use IMGBURN to burn the disc when the DVD SHRINK process is done. You'll have a choice in DVD SHRINK whether you want to create a ISO image or to create a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive that can be used to burn with NERO BURN. I'd suggest creating a ISO image then you can burn the disc with IMGBURN.

The guides section at IMGBURN website:
