Will Vista Home premium work in a 64 bit mode for an ADM Antholon 2x64 dual processor 4200, or do I have to upgrade to a higher Vista to make it work?

Yes you need 64 bit version not 32 bit, it'll run any version, but only get 64 bit perf. with the 64bit editions..Remember, as few drivers as there are for Vista out, subtract from that and you get the driver situation with 64bit vista

With the 64 bit version of Vista how much more performance can I expect for ADM Antholon 2x64 dual processor 4200, vs running it in Vista 32 bit software? My compressing time needs to improve. Any guess how much time it will save? 40%?

If you are using 32-bit applications for your rendering etc, you won't see much difference.

Vista 64 bit native applications are a little rare at present. System and device drivers may be an issue also. Make sure your motherboard manufacturer has them, along with your add-on card manufacturers, before committing yourself to the OS.
It's not entirely Vista's fault. There is somewhat still a lack of native 64 bit applications and drivers for XP 64 bit.
To a lesser degree, dual core aware applications that take full advantage of 2 or more CPUs are also not in abundance at present.
Here's a Vista compatibility page that may give you some idea of what's available. http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List
