Port forwarding is usually needed on LAN (or a modem with router) to map ports so that incoming torrent connections were re-addressed to a particular computer on LAN.
Any torrent client can work without it and the difference is not much noticeable (unlike e.g. with edonkey networking) on fresh and strong torrents with many peers. But if all peers around a torrent were misconfigured that way, no connection could be established at all, therefore it's a desirable thing to do port forwarding. Basically you have to set a static LAN address on your system and map the port range on your router for it. Details depend on your router model (yes, there's much info on portforward.com).
