Ive been using dvd shrink for years as my main dvd burning program.
Ever since i took my computer in to get extra ram installed it pretty much fails burning at least 80% of the time. Usually its right at the start of burning- say 2 or 3% but also the other end like 85-90%...never inbetween.

    What could be the problem?

It never used to have this problem.
Its got to the stage where i shrink with dvd shrink and copy with Clonedvd.

    Any advice guys?

Oh, a friend suggested checking the buffer...mmm umm how do i do that?

    Any other programs like shrink?

    Cheers

No, you've probably been using Nero for years as DVDShrink itself cannot burn

Seems pretty coincidental that you get more RAM put in and then this starts failing. I'd pull out the extra RAM you got put in and test it to see if that was the case.

Or your burner could be on the way out.

Or you could be using sub-standard media and/or have gotten a bad batch of previousky'good media.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Are you burning with Nero? DVD Shrink doesn't do any burning. What I would suggest is to use a modified version of DVD Shrink that uses ImgBurn instead of Nero or DVD Decrypter. It works better with newer drives. And the newer versions of Nero also may not work with Shrink. Another good reason not to use Nero.

The modified Shrink version is available here: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=63874

You can also add RipIt4Me or DVD Fab Decrypter and you should be able to back up any DVD you own, even the newest ones. And all freeware.

EDIT: And I doubt it's a buffer problem. Try the ImgBurn mod for Shrink. If that doesn't help, then I would suspect memory problems as jimmalenko mentioned, or the other problems.

Is it just me or does it appear that the modded version is no longer available for download ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

i realise schrink doesnt do the burning- i was just stating i have been using shrink for years.
Its not the media as i use top quality verbatim and/or TDK. Its not the drive as it works fine with Clonedvd.
JUst want another program that i can add multiple VOB files to burn to dvd that can also shrink them thats as simple as dvd shrink.
It was my most used program till this constant failure.

If you are having a hard time finding the Shrink/ImgBurn modified version, just try a Google search for 'DVD Shrink with ImgBurn' and you should find a hosting site. If you see anything about 'Shrink 2007' run the other way. It's SPAM and a FRAUD. ImgBurn and DVD Shrink are and have always been freeware.

If you can't find the modified software, you can still use DVD Decrypter or Nero to burn automatically. (With Nero, you need the 6X versions. 7X doesn't seem to work automatically.) Or use ImgBurn or any of those burning programs manually and save your DVD Shrink output as a ISO and burn from that.

    Have DVDShrink output to ISO.
Then burn the ISO with ImgBurn.
(That's the way I've always been using Shrink.)
    Oh. Just what redwudz said.

    sorry to seem naive
but how do i use imgburn with shrink
and how i do i output files as iso?

Ive been using shrink as normal...but when it asks to put a dvd in the drive to burn to, i cancel. Then go to clonedvd find the shink file and go from there. A little longer process than im used to with shrink...plus i find where i multiple files in dvdclone sometimes it doesnt burn all of them. Cant work that one out. I always make sure they are all ticked....

    Download modded EXE from http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=80208

Then choose "ISO Image and burn with ImgBurn" as your target device after clicking on the Backup button.

When you click on backup, change the target device to ISO File (instead of your burner).
    If in doubt, Google it.

    one slight problem

imgburn never works the first time now...always says something about sync and comes up with retry or cancel...if i retry it works but thats another 15 minutes that i could be burning something else.

    Anyone know what causes that?

The automation between Shrink and Nero was always dicey, such that I learnt to output to either folders or an ISO image and then imstigate the burning process manually. I suspect you may have more success doing the same with IMGBurn. So output just to an ISO File, then manually burn at your leisure.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    everytime its saying

    synchronise cache failure

which to that i press retry then it works the second time. Thats cool if im here in front of the comp but if i want to let it burn while i leave for awhile, its not going to work.

so in effect its taking double the time

It worked perfect the first time, i go to burn as iso file with imgburn...now it fails 1st then works a second time

    weird stuff.

    either TDK-R or Verbatim -R

why should that matter though if it works the second time around?

  18. What reason does it say for the failure?

If your machine / drive / media combo was working as it should be, there shouldn't be a problem.

If you've not already checked for firmware updates for the drive, now would be a good time to do so.

Also, try and keep clear of the cheap and cheerful blank discs. Stick to Verbatim and Taiyo Yudens.
