OK...I have burned things before without an issue, I use ConvertXtoDVD, I also have studio 10 for my own home movies. I use Nero 7 to burn DVD files as well. I was having issues burning with Studio 10, then I used studio 10 to make a mpeg2 file instead. With the mpeg2 file, I attempted to use convertxtodvd to create dvd files then burn. The creation of the DVD files was OK, however the burn was unsuccessful, and I used Nero to burn the DVD files at 16x, which was unsuccessful as well. I manually reduced the burn speed to 4x, and I got a good DVD. Finally, right? Well, I attempted to make the same DVD using the same DVD files, using the same write speed (4x), and I got error again. I restarted my PC and was able to burn another copy from dvd files at 4x speed, tried to burn the same project again without restarting pc, and no dice. BURN PROCESS FAILED

I have been trying to do some research before posting, and I feel that maybe I need a firmware update, but I am not sure, since I was able to burn a second copy...also, I am not too comfortable in upgrading/updating my firmware yet...so I thought I would get some advice from the "pros" first. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Check out the following log entry I received:

I have tried burning with studio 10, convertxtodvd and nero. As stated before, if I restart the computer, it burns a copy nice, but won't again, unless I restart the computer. I would hate to download several programs to try them. I used to do that and had to format my pc to get rid of spyware and adware. I was really hoping that someone who knew something about firmware (and read my error log) would give me some advise b4 I started downloading new programs...but if thats what it takes, then that is what it takes, I guess.

I will wait to see if anyone can offer me advice on firmware or things of that nature first...if not, I will download IMGBURN. 'Caus if it is a firmware problem...it won't matter what I use to burn. I really haven't had any issues burning until now. Thanks though. I will keep you posted.

    Several possibilities:

Sense Key: 0x00 (KEY_NO_SENSE) The computer lost contact with the burner. Is that a USB external burner? If so, something interrupted the data transfer. If it's an internal drive, something else running in the background may have caused the problem.

It could also be a disc problem: Disc Manufacturer ID: RICOHJPN Media type ID: R03 You might try a different brand if this is a common problem.

It doesn't look so much a Nero problem, but ImgBurn generally does a better job just burning than Nero.

And I would edit out your Nero serial number, under 'Owner' in your posted log, or you may find someone else will use it and invalidate your license.

    It is a USB connected external burner. (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A);

I do not feel it is Nero either...although, I will try to download IMGBurner and use that. I have used 2 different types of discs (Sony and Maxell); sony was an issue, but not before. Maxell, one worked, and the next time I tried, it didn't work, until I restarted my computer. Weird.

Do you think it could be the quality of the video my camcorder puts out? It is several years old, and I do have to use dvd-rw discs in my camcorder. They are kind of old...and once I get them onto my pc...i use studio 10 to create on large mpeg out of the several small ones I have. Come to think of it...I haven't had an issue burning dowloaded movies yet...just my home movies. Maybe I should get a camera with a hard drive in it, so the quality of the movie won't deteriorate as much when transferring to my pc (going from hard drive to hard drive instead of disc to hard drive); the discs i use, I always delete video off of and re-use. Do you think this could have something to do with it?

I think it's mostly a USB problem. This line, 'Device not available G: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A' is telling you the computer lost contact with the burner. USB has that problem at times. There can be a lot of activity on the USB bus at times, and you have a limited bandwidth. If you have other USB devices of any kind, try unplugging them before burning. And antivirus programs and other software programs or the OS itself may be scanning the bus and interrupt the transfers. You can usually check in 'Task Manager' and see what else may be running.

USB works fine most times, but it was designed for communication, not large file transfers. When the internal buffer on your DVD drive runs out of data while writing, it can't wait for long before closing the connection, then you could get that type of error. There are other causes, but that would be my suspicion.

But you might try ImgBurn on the same file. ImgBurn needs either a VIDEO_TS folder or a ISO type image file. It only burns, nothing else. Try it and if it fails, check it's error log. I wouldn't be surprised if you see the same type of 'lost communication' error with a failure.

Thanks. I do have one other usb connection...it is the one that my camcorder uses when I connect it to my pc. I have two 1.1 usb connection in the front, and like four other 2.0 usb connections in the back of my pc. So, my burner is constantly connected in the back, and the camcorder is as well...although I do not have the camcorder connected all the time nor when I am burning...I just hate to pull out the tower to connect it (it's in a cabinet). Should the other usb connection be an issue if there is no device connected to it?

I am currently downloading some film...when I am done. I will try to burn with IMGBURN my homevideo that is giving me all the problems. I will try to burn it twice without restarting my pc. Then I will try to burn film I am downloading. Thanks all for the info. I will post my results when I am done. BE SAFE THIS NEW YEAR!

Just curious, why don't you just burn the discs using the Pioneer drive? It would totally eliminate the whole USB issue.

As long as no other device is using the USB ports at the time you are burning with the external drive, there shouldn't be a problem from that. But the OS or software programs may use the USB bus also. That error Nero showed could be from a program that took over the USB bus momentarily.

Or it could be a cable problem, a problem with your external enclosures controller, or the DVD burner itself, or something entirely different. But I would suspect a software problem myself. ImgBurn may solve it. If not, look to some of your other programs that may be interfering. Nero 7 is a overly complex series of programs. If you are only burning discs, ImgBurn is a much better choice, IMO.

If you have other burning programs besides Nero, that can cause problems. I've had major problems with InCD that come with Nero. And Roxio and Nero don't always get along. Also some image drive programs like Daemon Tools or CloneDVD, if they create image drives, might cause problems.

Or it's possible the Nero error is referring to a DVD disc problem, though it doesn't seem to. It's always a good idea to try different brands of discs, just to eliminate that as a cause.

And here's a site that has a lot of USB information and troubleshooting programs if you want to do some research: http://www.usbman.com/USB_Guides.htm

Thanks...I will try. I do not use my Pioneer burner because it pretty much crapped the bed a little bit ago. doesn't recognize DVD media anymore...only CD media. I am going to be getting a new internal burner and installing it myself in a short time.

I've had trouble with external enclosures in the past - usually the interface card. I've had one that would work to an extent: Usually the extent where everything heated up. Finally tossed the interface and used the enclosure to house a DataVideo TBC (for the 12V power supply). I'd almost bet on the enclosure or the USB cable.

OK...here to post some results for everyone.

MpegEncoder...I use ConvertXtoDVD, it will shrink the DVD file size for me, also Nero has the option to choose DVD5 (shrink into 4500MB, and DVD itself stores 4700MB)...so my head fit on a DVD before, and has fit again. By looking at the log alone, not sure if you could tell. So, the file size isn't the issue for now. But thanks for the advice...the more I get, the merrier! Besides, those who are having the same problem as me, and do not have a shrink program, will encounter the problem you have mentioned.

I finally did replace my internal DVD burner with a new one...I burned the DVD without any issues at maximum speed! So, most likely, there is a problem (or perhaps limit) with the USB connection itself. Funny...a week ago, when I hooked up my camcorder to my pc via USB connection, I noticed it was in and out. I picked up the camcorder while it was still connected, and it worked with no problems. The USB cord was "fussy". I had to prop up the connecting end of the USB cord so it was parallel with the camcorder entry point/port. I am thinking, the USB connection to my external burning is acting up from time to time, or is good enough to handle smaller burn jobs, but when it comes to larger jobs...internal (or non USB) is the way to burn! The USB can time out or limit its effectiveness. Thank you so much for everyone's help and info!

    This forum is great!

It may be the USB cable (Or interface on the external drive) is marginal and the computer port has to keep resending the data. But after a bit, the errors accumulate too much to recover, the DVD drives buffer goes empty and the connection is lost. Just guessing, though.

It does sound like you are having some sort of cable problems, though. At least with your camcorder.

OK...I have burned several more DVDs to my new internal dvd rw drive (lite-on); I installed it myself, it was the first time...and was quite educational, and I am glad i did it. I have had no issues whatsoever. So, I am almost 100 percent positive the problem lays within the cable itself. At some point down the road, I will get a new cable, and start using my external burner again. At that point, I will update new results...but that may not be for quite some time.

*** [_ chef _], you had mentioned updating usb mobo/OS drivers...where would I do to do that (I have win xp), and how can I tell if I have the most up to date drivers? Where do I look in my OS? Thanks! ***

USB drivers are usually part of the motherboard drivers. You could check with the motherboard manufacturer and see if they have any upgrades. USB usually works or it doesn't. The basic USB 1.1 and 2.0 haven't had any changes, AFAIK.

But using a internal DVD drive is almost always the best way to go. With some newer motherboards that have SATA ports, you could use that with a external SATA optical drive and enclosure. It should work exactly the same as a internal SATA drive. IMO, a much better option than a USB or even a FireWire external drive. You can do this with a PCI SATA controller card, or use the motherboard SATA ports and a PCI slot SATA connector adapter with a cable to plug into the MB.

I've also got a problem burning. When i convert files with ConvertXToDVD, and then burn the files using the same program. I can play it in a dvd player for a while, but after a while it always stop working and skips from one scene (55min) to another (58min) and that ruins the movie. Should I try burnin with another program? or what? I don't understand why this is happening..

DVD skipping is more commonly caused by a problem with the DVD media, not the burning program. I would try a different brand.

You should also start a new thread and not threadjack someone elses, especially for a totally different issue.

HI after skimming thru this topic i'm still in need of help. Using Nero 7.8.5 to successfully write converted avi, mpeg, as well as back-up of dvd. Now that i am recovering from a bout with the (ms) antivirus I am unable to burn or write anything. No specific error, just burn failed. Attempted to remove all aspects of virus and spyware, even re-installed nero. Drive is Pioneer is 111-d Here is a copy of burn log

There are actually two specific errors:

The first is likely a communication problem and the second seems to refer to your DVD media, though there are other causes possible. You could try burning the file with ImgBurn to determine is Nero is the problem. I would also try a different brand of media.

If you made no hardware changes, and a loose cable, bad power supply or failing burner isn't likely, it's probably something in the software.

When you removed/reinstalled Nero, did you use the Nero Clean Tool? If not, some of the previous version may still be there.

I would use Nero Clean and reinstall the software: http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-cleantools.html
Try a different brand of DVD Media.
Try using ImgBurn to burn the VIDEO_TS folder that Nero made.

Thanx. I will use clean tool. Is that before or after reinstall? Also here is another burn log. ?Unlike the previous this is a file backed-up thru fab and successfully burned in nero b-fore the virus attack.
