  1. Im interested in purchasing a stand alone cd burning deck (specifically a Teac RW-D250), but I want to use cd-r that are labelled as "data disc' (like some Office Depot 100 for $40 types)

Would there be any reason why these discs couldnt burn as an audio compilation if theyre labelled as 'Data Discs'??

    Thanks

you can use them - there are studio grade audio cd's (like HHB CDR74 Gold) , but for the average user - not really necessary

  3. Well, as long as the ones I have will work, Im cool.

Just to ask, why would these cds be labelled as 'Data Disc' when they can be used as audio discs as well??

    Yeah...
the only diff. i ever knew of was you had to use the "Audio" cdr's for standalone music cd recorders & pay more money for them so "The Man" get's his share for us being able to make compilation cd's

I've used Verbatim cdr's for close to 10 years for music and they still play fine, as long as it's good media or you want the "True" 24k gold disc's i never found any diff.

What are blank audio CDs or CD-R Audio?

There are special CD-Rs called "blank audio CDs" made for use in home recording units that allow the users to copy audio CDs. These are referred to as "CD-R Audio" by the Copyright Board. They attract a levy of 77˘ each in canada to allow for legal copy of any music (in canada that is) you own or obtain (downloading is still legal in canada).

These CD-Rs include a specially embossed section on the disk that is read by "consumer" CD recorders. You cannot use regular CD-Rs in these recorders. These CD-Rs work with with the Serial Copy Management System (SCMS) which prevents the CD from being duplicated. (That is, it will not copy a copy.)

HHB's widely acclaimed CDR74 Gold AUDIO is optimised for use in professional audio CD recorders, using an ultra-stable Phthalocyanine recording dye to achieve exceptional recording accuracy and a secure archival life of 100 years.

Orange Book specifications are exceeded in all areas with the critical Reflection Ratio increased to greater than 74% through the use of a silver reflective layer, resulting in greater compatibility with a wider range of CD recorders and players. Indeed, as is the case with all HHB Advanced Media Products, the CDR74 Silver is extensively tested for use in a broad selection of industry standard hardware.

'Audio' CDRs have a code on them that designates that because standalone audio CD recorders pay a royalty. That's why 'Audio' CDRs cost more, the license fee. Other than that they are the same. You may have to use 'Audio' CDRs with this stand alone deck.
According to this: http://www.ioproducts.com/digaudcdrmed.html they also prevent copies of copies.

@ BJ_M: You beat me to it while I was fact checking. Guess I'll have to think faster...

    I thought that's kind of what i said :P

And i still have some of the "real gold" cdr's left in a cakebox, I picked up 100 back 2-3 years ago for some rare stuff i was making and archiving, & they were not cheap either 8)
I think they are 24k gold layer.
