No editing needed - just name the avi and .srt the same (movie.avi, movie.srt) and your player should play the AVI with subs provided it's capable of AVI playback.
If not, convert to Video DVD with convertx2dvd

thx man.. :P :P
but before I burn out the files on a dvd..
do i have to burn it as video dvd or data dvd (using nero 7 or maybe you can post a link to a software that is better to burn with)
and one last question..how do i find out if my dvd is capable of AVI playback

Ah, what you want to do is convert it to DVD format. That's MPEG-2, so you're going to need an MPEG-2 encoder. You'll also need a DVD Authoring program.
This has been discussed a bajillion times, so you're just looking to convert an AVI to an MPEG-2 for use in a DVD authoring program.
This site has some guides, and www.doom9.org has more information than you need.
Also, if your DVD player can play AVI files then it will say Divx on it, somewhere. Otherwise you have a standard DVD player and you have to go through the hassle of encoding. If your player has a Divx logo on it, then you can just burn the AVI and SRT together onto a DVD RW disc as a data DVD. It might not support subtitles in SRT, so I'd use the RW disc to check. -

ConvertXtoDVD is the simplest method if you want to create a DVD. Convert to your HDD, then burn with imgburn. Leave Nero out of the equation.
If you can play back avi files, make sure both files have the same name, eg:
Movie1.avi
Movie1.srt
then burn as data.Read my blog here.

and see if it can do Divx/Xvid playback, which is what you want. You mentioned that your player doesn't support Xvid. While that might be true, it is also possible that the video was encoded with certain settings that the player doesn't support. You'll need to check your player on the list to be sure if it doesn't support Divx/Xvid or not.
