I have been out of authoring for about 3-4 years now. I started out with Ulead Movie Factory but eventually moved to ULead Video Studio. I tried out DVD-Lab, but back then it was buggy, and also TEMPGEnc's program, which was pretty limited. Womble made a great editor called MPEG Video Wizard 2003, but I bet something is better now.
What's good nowadays? Does anyone have any favorites?

For raw footage I think your Ulead will do fine.
I use Womble's Wizard for mpeg2 files, it works well, but menu is limited.
DVDLabPro, latest version, about the best in flexibility for its cost. I did not find any problems with it yet.
On top you can always fix commands in PgcEdit or DVDRemake later, if you are not happy with what DVD lab export.
I found its Abstraction layer somehow too complex for simple DVD, but that is what you get for making it user friendly.
