I now have a brand New Sony dvd rw aw-g170a. Ial bought some Sony DVD-R's & got the following results running Nero CD-DVD Speed Test:-

I seem to be getting loads of Errors @ the end. Also I find if I set the Read speed to 1x times in the test then I get less errors. Any suggestions??!

The SONY DVD-R media is pure crap buy some VERBATIM dvd media and you'll have better results. I bought a 100 pack spindle of SONY DVD-R from Office Depot a few weeks back and had them price match BEST BUY. I've done some quality scans just to see what sort of results I would have. They were all crappy quality scans. I even burned them in every dvd burner that I own and they still were horrific quality scans. Some of the discs did have problems in playing back but others were fine. Go figure!

Buy VERBATIM or TAIYO YUDEN dvd media!

On the other hand Sony DVD +R are very good in my experience. I have a Mintek portable DVD player that won't play Ridata +R or Verbatim -R or +R recordings, but the finicky Mintek plays Sony +R with zero problems.

Three out of four posters on the DVDwriter section have had problems with this drive. The fourth had to update his firmware to 173.

Update your firmware for a start.

Then decide whether this is crappy media or a crappy drive.

My prejudice is that this is a crappy drive but I have no proof, just a gut instinct.

The Sony dvd rw aw-g170a is rebadged NEC drive which isn't the greatest to begin with. You'd be better off with getting a PIONEER 112 or LITEON 18x or 20x spd drive. As I mentioned buy some VERBATIM media to see whether or not it's a dvd media problem.
