Hello,
I would like to choose the most appropriate DVD burner for the use of archivig my photography.
I understand there is an error rate software to scan the dvd after burning. Some of have looked into include Plextools and Kprobe.
Are there other software error rate programs anyone can recommend? I understand Plextools is designed for Plextor and Kprobe is made for Lite-On. Do these programs work with other DVD burner brands? Is there software like this available for Pioneer or Kprobe or Plextools work with a Pioneer burner.
My main criteria in choosing a DVD burner will be to ensure the best burnt DVD possible, therefore trying to have the life of the DVD last as long as possible. Speed is not something I need at all, it is the quality of the burn. Taking this into consideration I would appreciate any recommendations someone might have.

You would probably have better luck with questions of this nature over at CDFreaks.com in the Media Testing/Identifying Software Forum. Link Here:

Quality scanning is a hobby of mine but it is extremely difficult to draw definitive conclusions without some degree of uncertainty. It requires a lot of time to perform scans and even longer studying all the opinions on how to perform and interpret findings. Nowadays it is probably easier to just buy top media and a well respected burner and just leave it at that. Anyway Erik Deppe's Nero CD-DVD Speed is one of the best products - Link here:

I prefer LiteOn drives for scanning especially since Benq's are next to impossible to get here in the US. Good Luck. -
The issue isn't necessarily in choosing the "best" burner. All drives are capable of creating error free burns. It is just a matter of trial and error in choosing best media and burn speed for each burner.
Just choose any burner you like, then get samples of various media and perform burn tests to see which media type/brand works best.
For software, Nero cdspeed or dvdinfo pro work well.Google is your Friend
