I bought Vegas Movie Studio + DVD Platinum edition (V7.0) a couple of months ago from Amazon and dutifully sent in my invoice and UPC etc to get my rebate. Last week I got a postcard back from Sony saying that I did not send my UPC.

Of course, there is nothing the weenie on the phone can do without my UPC or a copy of it. The fact that I have registered the S/W, provided the invoice, could provide the serial numbers etc does not count.

Of course I don't have a copy of the UPC. I did find the UPC of 855309867775 listed here.

Can anyone out there confirm that UPC is correct or point me in the right direction to a site where I might find an image of the UPC.

If that is where you bought it from.

The first six digits of the UPC are the vendor’s unique identification number. All of the products that one vendor sells will have the same first six digits in their UPCs. The next five digits are the product’s unique reference number that identifies the product within any one vendor’s line of products

It should be on your Amazon paperwork, but I assume you don't have that any more. Amazon should have a record, if you can get through to their customer service.

Is it possible to find a store selling it retail?

If so - buy a copy, photocopy the UPC and return the software (unopenned). Mail in (or scan and email) and say it's your copy.

I've never mailed the actual UPC. I've always sent in a printed copy and have never had a problem.

The same product can have several different UPCs, perhaps depending on if it's bundled with something; or in this case whether a rebate is payable. So I'd be cautious in using UPCs from other offers.

Yes, I do have that so I'll check it.

    Xylob, thanks for the link.

SquirrelDip, good idea! Never thought of that.

If you're SURE it's the same UPC (see my other comments), you don't need to do all that, just write the number down. A barcode is just a graphic version of the number.

If you want, you can generate the barcode in any number of applications from the number, then print it out and photocopy it to give your forgery authenticity.

I'm not going down that path. I just want to establish that the UPC I found is correct. If it is, I suspect I can just give them the number over the phone.

Hmmm ... interesting. Went to Bestbuy, the UPC is different again. Searched around online and found another UPC 0855309678678. Called Sony again and finally a problem acknowedged at their end. In their "system" the UPCs on file did not match those on packages and hence EVERYONE was rejected. And EVERYONE got a postcard stating they did not send in their original UPC. So, now they are going to process my rebate on the basis they screwed up. Nice.

I wonder whether everyone has to call to get theirs processed?

yea -- as i mentioned , BB (and some others) uses a different UPC and it is a big problem for a lot of rebate centers who do the actual work
