I am sorry if there is a discussion on this, I couldn't find 1

I am looking to edit a divx file in windows movie maker. It imports just fine but when I try and play it, nothing comes up, just black, also happens when I export it to just try and convert it.

Any idea how to fix this without having to convert it with different software first?

Does MS say they support divx MPeg4? That is news to me.

If not you need to convert divx to something WMM accepts or use a different editor.

Many video apps will "accept" a video stream that's in a standard AVI container (which DivX/Xvid usually is), but then baulk at decoding the stream. It understands the container format; it doesn't understand the codec. It can either A) process the codec through it's own routines or B) use standard VWF/Directshow APIs for using system-wide codec handling. ESPECIALLY if it does (A), it needs to expressly state that it supports that type.
