Hey guys i have noticed that lately when i browse spikedhumour.com that the speed of the download is really slow, this never used to to the case, i have tried the site on my girlfriends laptop and it runs fine, i have nothing else runnin when using IE
However if i am running a program like Azerus i cant get a dl of over 80k per sec
Any ideas what could cause it to be slow?

Are both you pc and your gf's laptop using the same internet connection? If other downloads and speedtests from your pc are fine (specifically other downloads using IE), then I suspect the problem lies in your internet connection/ISP.
Google is your Friend -
Hmmm let me take a guess .... your isp is Virgin media (aka NTL/Telewest) .... since the change from ntl/telewest to virgin media they have made a lot of changes to their proxy cache servers and seem to be having a lot of dns issues causing browsing speeds to be somewhat erratic .... works fast for a short while and then goes to a crawl, you get an odd spike of speed but it doesn't last long. .... strangely though downloading speeds (such as torrents and other p2p apps) are not affected and good speeds can be had .... its just the browsing ... not much you can do about it apart from keep nagging virgin to fix it (although i doubt they will listen lol)
The problem has been discussed on cablehell.co.uk and on cableforum.co.uk .... despite numerous complaints to Virgin Media the problem continues .... and its annoying, unfortunately the only other alternative is ADSL which requires a BT line and to get good speeds you need to be close to the local exchange -
Krispy Kritter: My PC and GF Laptop are on different connections in different houses, is there a program i can use to test the speeds of my internet? Or could there be something else i could try?
psx_pirate: Im afraid i am not on Virgin media so sorry to waste your time -
No problem Squid_uk ....
Have you run an antivirus and adware/spyware scan? .... download Hijackthis and check for any IE hijackers that may be caursing a problem .... also if you havent already done it you should defragment your hdd -
I have but i will do it again and will also try Hijack, windows tells me that i do not need to defrag the drive either
EDIT: Only thing with Hijack is i dont know what to delete or keep -
hi,
You didn't mention if there any other slowness issues with other websites.....
also what version IE do you have....
Don't if this is your problem however something to try....
if IE7 ... there is a known issue with it if youhave not kept up with the updates.... where sites are slow.. in that case the issue is with the phishing filter... it takes a while for it to scan a webpage before displaying... so a quick fix would be to turnoff the phishing filter and see if that helps..
note: M$ has a patch avail but i haven't seen any good feedback if it works as advertise

EDIT: Im not 100% sure but i does seem like it happens on site with alot of info eg youtube, spikedhumour etc -

Windows will not let me defrag its tells me that there is no need to.
Here is a copy of the Hijack log

hi,
here the link...
b. . there a patch avail from M$ that supposidly fixes this issue....
now the cumulative updates you should have it already but if you don't.... go to this link... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928089 it talks about it and you can download the patch...
good luck
Now a couple of other things... you can look at....
1. the routing between you and that particular site. or several sites.. there maybe some slow relay points.. a coupole of way to check.... by using dos window and your a couple of commands....
a. the ping command... give you a overall round trip time ..example of usage... ping yahoo.com
b. the tracert command, this shows how long it takes to go thru each relay point .. I avg about 70ms antyhing over 200 I considered slow.... not much you can do but it can help narrow the problem down to your computer or it just the internet... example of usage tracert yahoo.com
2. another thing to look at is programs running in the background.. maybe there causing some issues... so disable all the needless ones..... from your msconfig>startup tab and as far as the other you do need just temporaily turn them off and see if it helps...
3. almost forgot... sometimes cookies can cause a problem..... so you may want to clean out the cookes... and see if that helps

hi,
as far as number 1 item.... I used yahoo.com for the example but you would put the desitinaion url in it's palce..... just open up the dos box window and type tracert (and the url of the distinations)
play around with using yahoo for the destination so you get use to what to see...

Attached is a few screens of the Ping and Tracert commands using yahoo.co.uk and spikedhumor.com

hi,
first I tried to get to spikedhumour.com and right now I can't I don't know if there down or another issue with there server....
now looking at your numbers...
Now keep in mind that time of day can effect the numbers
i thought the ping numbers for yahoo.uk.com at 120 just little high, than mine from the states at 92ms .... but nothing to be concerned about
doing a trancert for yahoo your numbers looked pretty good except in the beginning a couple of high numbers on your end/server .. but that could be a just isolated instance , running tracert a few more at different times of day would clarify if that cnsistant or not........... may find it go back down to match the numbers...
on spikedhumour.com ... both the ping and tracert.... the number are very very high... there a problems there... it appear you do ok but as you get close to spiked humour.com the numbers start jumping to a couple hundred and it appear when you get to humou it jumps to 1200ms... that is very bad.. smile..... it appears there are problems with humour.. you could maybe try and send them a email message to them and see what they say.. defintiely on there end...
note: i tried this morning to call up spiked humour webpage and could NOT do it...!! also i did tracert and ping and all I get is time out result from there end!!!.. smile... at this point i believe the issue is striclty spikehumour... the fact that your friend computer they get thru could be because of time of day .. but not sure.... don't know what else to say... it could be server issuer there could be coding issue with the thiere server or website.... I don't know..
one added tip....for winxp, insteat of pictures....... another way to copy the text of the dos screen besides doing a screen capture routine..... you'll like this.. smile....
1. do a right click and click select all
2. then do a ctrl+C that copies things to the clipboard
3. open your wordpad or wordprocess or what ever
4. then just click paste and voila ... now it in text form you can edit or do what ever
smile....
a variation of this to just for select portion
1. right click and click MARK
2. the click and drag over the area you want
3. then hit the return key!! that put selected text on the clipboard
4. then open your notepad or what ever.... and paste

What people fail to understand is that the Internet is a VARIABLE. Sites go down, traffic gets high, connections can change.
I routinely set home pages to Google instead of the default Dell or MSN page. Simple reason, Google never goes down and the others frequently do. People get "page cannot be displayed", they think their PC or internet connection is broken, when the problem is at the other end.
A good site for an informal test in NFL.com. Rarely down or slow, except on Super Bowl sunday, pictures, video, quality servers. Testing will reveal slower speeds at the open and close of the business day, peak periods, but give you a general average. Hit this site about a dozen times over a few days, you will get a good speed gage. A numeric speed test tells you the raw performance at that particular second. Not really very useful.
Think of this like traffic on a highway. I can get across town in less than 20 minutes, at two o'clock in the morning. Rush hours takes 45 minutes to an hour. Sometimes a street is blocked off and I have to park somewhere else. In all of this, my car is running just fine, nothing I can do about the problems.
Obviously, check for spyware, delete Temp files, add-ons, etc. -
well that has made me feel alort better know that it is not my connection causing the problems
