  3. Er...that's only for the US market and only for retail sales.

Note: figures are for retail channel sales only and do not include
direct sales, sales from Wal-Mart or warehouse clubs.
Do you have global market share data?

    According to http://communities-dominate.blogs.com/brands/2006/07/demise_of_a_dar.html:

UPDATE JANUARY 2007 - we have just written the final chapter to this iPod saga as Apple reported its final numbers. The final market share of iPod is 12.9% for the year 2006 with musicphones outselling iPods by 7 to 1.

  4. yes I know it was US only, and retail only. but seeing as it's in the top 10 (each model has a spot) on amazon.com i figure the "rest" of US sales doesn't differ that much.

oh and on your second point the "mp3 players" they are talking about are phones that play mp3's i don't know about you, but to me thats like comparing the sales of the NES to the WII, they both play nes games but the WII does SOOO much more, the nes games feature is just that, a feature not the main use. like the wii the mobile phones are sold to talk on the mp3 is just a feature.

    (edit)
After the iPhone comes out it would be a better comparison, than the iPod vs. mobile phone comparison.

    (edit 2)
I will try to find the global market share.

    amazon.com
    Amazon.co.uk
I'm not fluent enough to look up the amazon.co.jp top mp3 players.....

True, but that feature allows them to not buy a MP3-only player. I have a family member who's a big "latest and greatest" type of technology dork, and he bought a fancy cell phone for music/video/phone.

as pointed put in countless articles worldwide - the iPhone is nothing special and is in fact , outdated already ...

but it is true that cell phones can do so much more than iPods right now ...
